What Defines a Silverback Gorilla?
A silverback is not a separate species or subspecies of gorilla. It is simply an adult male gorilla that has reached full maturity. The name comes from the silver-grey hair that develops across his back as he gets older. Before this stage, young males are called blackbacks. They are still growing, learning, and watching how the group is led. As time passes, their bodies grow bigger and stronger.
The dark hair on their back slowly turns into a silver band. This is how a silverback is formed. But a silverback is more than just his looks. He is usually the leader of the family group. He guides the troop, protects them, and keeps order. Other gorillas depend on him for safety and direction.
Silverbacks are also known for their strong displays. They may beat their chest, call loudly, charge, or slap vegetation. These actions are not always about fighting.

Silverback gorilla height
Silverback gorillas can stand up to about 6 feet (1.8 metres) tall when fully upright. But in reality, you will rarely see them standing like that.
Most of the time, they move on all fours. In this position, their true size becomes even more striking. Their broad chest, wide shoulders, and long, powerful arms give them an incredible presence in the forest. Everything about their body is built for strength, balance, and moving easily through thick vegetation.

A typical silverback gorilla weighs around 195kg (430 pounds). Some large males can weigh more than 200kg, making them the biggest and strongest members of the gorilla family.

Silverback gorillas are incredibly strong animals. Studies suggest they can be up to 9 times stronger than an average human. And they can bite more forcefully than a lion.

Where can you see silverback gorillas?
The best and safest places to see silverback gorillas today are in Uganda and Rwanda.
In Uganda, you can see gorillas in two national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Most gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi. It is a vast, ancient rainforest in the southwest of the country. It is home to the largest number of mountain gorillas on Earth and offers a dense, magical jungle experience. Mgahinga is smaller and quieter, but it also gives you a real chance to meet a gorilla family. It is set in a dramatic volcanic landscape on the border with Rwanda and Congo.
In Rwanda, gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park, located in the Virunga Mountains. This park is famous for its beautiful scenery and well-organised treks.
Unlike a traditional safari, gorilla trekking is done on foot. You walk through thick rainforest with experienced rangers until you find a gorilla family. It is a deep, personal, and unforgettable wildlife experience.
What Is the Chance of Seeing Silverback Gorillas?
The chance of seeing silverback gorillas on a trek is very high. In most cases, it is above 95%. This high success rate is possible because gorilla families are tracked every day by experienced rangers. They usually know where each group is located and guide your trek in that direction.
However, it is still a wild animal encounter. The gorillas live freely in their natural forest habitat. This is what makes the experience so special. You are entering their world as a visitor.
