Family Trips in Africa

Fully tailored to details that matter.

Africa Family safaris

A family safari vacation to Africa needs careful consideration of ages, whishes, and possibilities. Whether you are traveling with young children, teenagers, young adults, or an entire generation including Grandpa and Grandma: a suitable safari can be put together for every family. At Greenway Nature Tours Africa, we organize family trips tailored to the composition of your family or travel group. Think of a private safari in Uganda, Kenya, or Tanzania, a gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda or a combination with a relaxing beach stay. Together, we will determine which tour destination and trip type suits you best. This creates a tour package with the right balance of adventure, relaxation, and experience.

Family trips in Africa

Multigenerational, the family, or other composition?

The term ‘family travel’ is a very broad concept encompassing many different types of trips. Some travel with young children, others with teenagers or adult children. Perhaps you are planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip with grandparents as well. Whatever your family looks like, Africa offers wonderful opportunities. At the same time, every family trip requires careful planning. The ages of your children, your family size, interests, and travel style all influence the best itinerary. Important questions include: Are your children old enough for the required vaccinations and malaria medication? Can they sleep in their own room or safari tent? And which activities are suitable for everyone? By considering these details in advance, we can create a safari that perfectly suits your family and ensures everyone enjoys the adventure.

Ages and primate trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda has a minimum age of 15 years, while chimpanzee trekking is open to children from 12 years. If your children are too young, you can still choose to do the trek yourself while they enjoy a guided nature walk with your driver-guide. By then, you will have spent several days together, and they will feel comfortable in familiar hands. Of course, you can also decide to skip primate trekking altogether. Uganda and Rwanda offer so much wildlife, nature, and adventure that your family will still enjoy an unforgettable journey. Almost all other activities are suitable for children. Many adventurous experiences also have family-friendly alternatives. Rafting, for example, has a minimum age of 16 for the more challenging rapids, but family rafting offers the same beautiful setting in a gentler way. In the end, a family holiday is not about one activity. It is about the unforgettable moments you share together.

We Create Your Tailor-Made Family Safari

Every family is different, so every family safari should be too. Before we design your trip, we take the time to get to know you and your family. We discuss who is traveling, what everyone enjoys, and what you hope to experience. Do you prefer an active adventure or a slower pace? What do your children enjoy most? Which activities are a must, and where would you like more time to relax? We use all this information to create a safari that truly fits your family. Whenever possible, we keep the itinerary flexible. Many activities can remain optional, allowing your family to decide on the day who would like to join and who would rather relax. This gives everyone the freedom to enjoy the trip in their own way.

Family safaris

How large can the group be?

Your family group can be as small or as large as you like. We organize trips for very small families, but also for families coming with seven or more people. Many of our family safaris include children between the ages of 12 and 20, but East Africa is also a wonderful destination for families with younger children. If you are traveling with a larger group, we will normally use two safari vehicles to ensure everyone has enough space and comfort. While the group may occasionally be in separate vehicles, you will still enjoy the same itinerary and experiences together. The larger your group, the earlier we recommend booking. Ideally, you should reserve your trip 9 to 12 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the high season. This gives us the best chance of securing your preferred lodges and activities.

Traveling at a relaxed pace

When traveling with children, we almost always recommend a slower pace. A relaxed itinerary allows everyone to enjoy the journey much more. Often, it is the little moments that become the best memories. Stopping for fresh fruit along the roadside. Enjoying a long lunch. Taking a short walk during a travel day. Or simply spending more time relaxing at the lodge. Many families assume that shorter driving days are always better for children. As a result, they sometimes consider adding extra overnight stops. In our experience, this is usually unnecessary. Every additional stop means packing, unpacking, and settling into a new place again. Instead, we prefer longer stays at fewer lodges. This gives your family time to unwind, enjoy several activities from one location, explore the surrounding area, and end the day with a swim or some quiet time together. It is this balance between adventure and relaxation that makes a family safari enjoyable for both children and parents.

We ensure comfort for everyone

You will spend quite a bit of time on the road during your family safari, so comfort is essential. That is why we use specially designed 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers, built for African safari travel. Everyone has their own comfortable seat, plenty of space, and a personal charging point for phones and cameras. Comfort is not only about the vehicle. It is also about traveling with the right guide. Based on our conversations with you, we carefully select a driver-guide whose personality and experience best match your family. This creates a relaxed atmosphere and helps turn your family safari into a truly unforgettable experience.

Child discount

Many of the accommodations we use offer spacious family rooms or larger room types where the whole family can stay together. Depending on the lodge and room category, children up to 12 years old often receive a discounted rate, and at some properties the age limit is even higher. In remote tented camps and unfenced safari lodges, safety regulations may be different. Because wildlife can move freely through the property, very young children are sometimes not allowed to stay in a separate room. In these cases, parents are required to share a room or tent with their child or children. We always take these requirements into account when planning your family safari.

Generational journeys

Almost every itinerary on our website can be adapted for families. Whether you are traveling with young children, teenagers, adult children, grandparents, or several generations together, we will tailor the trip to suit your family. Each family has different interests, expectations, and travel styles. That is why we take the time to understand what matters most to you before designing your itinerary. Once we know what your ideal holiday looks like, we create a safari that fits your family perfectly. Not sure which destination is right for your family? We are happy to guide you through the options and help you plan a journey that everyone will enjoy and remember for years to come.

Frequently asked questions

About Africa Family Safaris

A family trip to Africa can feel nerve-wracking. We can imagine you have practical questions about this. However, when everything is arranged down to the last detail, that tension quickly fades, leaving plenty of room to simply enjoy yourself. We have already answered the most frequently asked questions about a family trip to East Africa for you below.

Gorilla trekking is only available to visitors aged 15 years and older. This age limit is strictly enforced because of the physical demands of the trek and the need to protect the gorillas.

If you are traveling with younger children, there are plenty of wonderful alternatives. Depending on your itinerary, they can enjoy activities such as guided nature walks, cultural experiences, or a visit to the playful golden monkeys.

Where appropriate, we can also divide the day’s program. While some family members go gorilla trekking, the others take part in an activity better suited to their age and interests.

This way, every member of the family enjoys a memorable experience, regardless of age.

We carefully plan your route to keep long travel days to a minimum. Our goal is always a relaxed pace that works for the whole family.

Along the way, we include plenty of breaks. You might stop for lunch, stretch your legs, enjoy fresh fruit from a roadside market, or visit an interesting place along the route.

After a longer drive, we make sure there is time to relax. This could mean an afternoon at a lodge with a swimming pool or simply a quiet evening with no planned activities.

It is this balance between travel, adventure, and downtime that keeps the journey enjoyable and ensures everyone has the energy to make the most of the experience.

Yes, we select accommodations that are a good fit for families. These can be family rooms, but also two rooms close together, depending on what works best at each location.

We always consider what is practical and comfortable for you as a family. Think of sufficient space, a pleasant layout, and a place where everyone can unwind after a day on the road.

It is precisely because of this alignment that the stay feels not only pleasant but also natural during the trip.

East Africa is a safe destination to travel through, especially when the trip is well organized. You always travel with an experienced local tour guide who knows the routes, areas, and accommodations inside out.

We work with regular partners and reliable lodges, and know exactly where everything is well organized. That provides peace of mind during the trip.

As is the case everywhere, common sense remains important, but in practice, families experience East Africa as a safe and relaxed destination. Precisely because everything is well prepared and guided, you can fully focus on the experience.

Yes, the activities are always tailored to the family composition. We look at the ages, interests, and a pace that feels comfortable.

For families with younger children, we often choose accessible and varied activities, such as boat safaris, short walks, wildlife spotting, and moments to simply enjoy being outdoors.

For teenagers, we add a bit more action and adventure. Think cycling, rafting, longer hikes, or activities where they really experience something themselves.

It is good to take age limits for certain treks into account. For chimpanzee trekking, a minimum age of 12 usually applies, and for gorilla trekking, 15 years.

It is precisely because of this coordination that the trip remains interesting and fun for everyone, without becoming too heavy or too hectic.

During a family tour, we ensure a balanced and pleasant pace. This means alternating longer travel days with multiple nights in one place. This creates space to relax and ensures you don’t have to be constantly on the move.

In doing so, we pay close attention to what works for families. Think of extra stops along the way, time to take a quick swim at the lodge, or simply an afternoon of doing nothing.

In general, we recommend a minimum age of approximately 8 to 10 years. This is mainly due to the travel days, distances, and type of activities in countries like Uganda and Rwanda.

For younger children, it can sometimes be a bit intense, while older children and teenagers often experience it as a great adventure. Seeing wildlife, being on the road, and discovering a completely different environment often makes a strong impression.

With the right structure and a pleasant pace, it is perfectly possible to tailor the trip to families. This creates an experience that is not only special but also sustainable for everyone.
