This 10-Day Rwanda Tour combines the most beautiful natural and cultural experiences of Rwanda: from the wildlife in Akagera National Park to the rainforests of Nyungwe National Park and the unique gorilla trekking in the Virunga volcanoes (Volcanoes National Park). Your Itinerary In Details
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Welcome to the heart of Africa! Upon landing at Kigali International Airport (KGL) and breathe in the pleasantly mild air, leave everyday life behind. You will be greeted by your Greenway Nature Tours Africa guide at the exit of the arrivals hall. After a relaxed initial briefing, you will be taken on a short drive to your hotel which will give you your first impression of Kigali. Settle in and prepare yourself for the natural wonders to come.

Day 2: Kigali – Akagera National Park (travel time approx. 5 hours)
After a delicious breakfast, you will immerse yourself in the history and present of Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. On your drive through the city, you will visit the Genocide Memorial – a deeply moving experience that respectfully addresses Rwanda’s turbulent past. Then, a very special lunch awaits you at the legendary Hotel Mille Collines, made famous worldwide by the film “Hotel Rwanda”.
In the afternoon, you leave Kigali city behind and embark on journey to the eastern province. You will drive past lush banana plantations and colorful, bustling roadside fruit markets, before you reach Akagera National Park, on the border with Tanzania. Here, the landscape transforms dramatically into a labyrinth of open savanna grasslands, wetlands, and shimmering lakes. In the evening, listen to the grunting of hippos in the nearby river from your terrace.

Day 3: Akagera National Park
This day is dedicated to the beautiful nature of Akagera. The national park forms a breathtaking contrast to the mist-shrouded mountains of western Rwanda. Extensive game drives will take you through open, acacia-fringed plains and dense riverine forests. Look out for African bush elephants, massive African buffalos, and elegant giraffes. Unique antelopes such as the sable antelope and the Defassa waterbuck may also cross your path.
In the afternoon, you will change your perspective: a boat safari on Lake Ihema will take you gently across the water. The Akagera wetland system is home to an almost unbelievable number of hippos and crocodiles. For birdwatchers, this area is a true paradise – with a bit of luck, you might spot the colorful papyrus shrike or the rare shoebill stork in the papyrus swamps. End this eventful day around a crackling campfire under the endless African starry sky.

Day 4: Akagera National Park – Kigali (travel time approx. 5 hours)
After a hearty breakfast, you will drive towards the northern park exit. Here, you will embark on one last exciting morning game drive to capture the wildlife in the soft light of the early sun. Later, the road winds back down into the highlands to Kigali city. The rest of the afternoon in the capital is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Relax by your hotel’s pool, take advantage of the excellent service, and recharge for the days ahead.

Day 5: Kigali – Nyungwe National Park (travel time approx. 5 hours)
Enjoy a good breakfast and then depart southwards. Your first destination is Butare (Huye) – the intellectual heart of Rwanda. Along the way, you will take a step back in time to the royal past: In Nyanza, you will visit the faithfully reconstructed palace of the former king of Rwanda (Mwami). The masterfully woven domed structures offer a fascinating glimpse into the feudal monarchy of the 19th century.
When you reach Butare, you will visit the National Museum – one of East Africa’s most impressive ethnographic museums, which presents rich cultural history of Rwanda in an excellent curated manner. After a leisurely lunch, the scenery changes once again: The road winds upwards, the air becomes cooler, until you finally reach the Nyungwe mountain rainforest.

Day 6: Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee Trekking
As the jungle awakens and the morning dew settles over the dense forest canopy, your next great adventure begins: chimpanzee trekking in the heart of Nyungwe Forest National Park. In company of an expert trackers, you will set out in search of these fascinating, lively primates. Once you have located the family of chimpanzees, you will spend an unforgettable hour in their presence, observing them up close in their natural habitat.
Deeply moved by this encounter, you return to the lodge in the afternoon. The rest of the day is dedicated to relaxation. Take advantage of the peace and quiet and the amenities of your accommodation to unwind amidst nature.

Day 7: Nyungwe Forest – Lake Kivu (travel time approx. 7 hours)
After a hearty breakfast, leave the dense canopy of Nyungwe rainforest and drive through beautiful landscapes of Rwanda down to Lake Kivu. It is one of the large lakes of the Albertine Rift Valley and, with its vast freshwater surface area of over 2,600km2, the largest water body in Rwanda. The Lake Kivu area is often referred to as the “Riviera of Rwanda”. After your arrival, you can spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing to your heart’s content. Stroll along the palm-fringed shore, breathe in the fresh sea breeze, or take a dip in the gentle waves. The soft lapping of the water in the evening provides the perfect contrast to the exhilarating experiences of the previous days.

Day 8: Lake Kivu – Volcanoes National Park (travel time approx. 2 hours)
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast overlooking Lake Kivu before continuing your journey northwest. The route winds through the green, hilly heart of Rwanda, past steep, intricately terraced fields that give the region its name. Lastly, you reach Musanze (Ruhengeri) – the gateway to the renowned Volcanoes National Park. Settle into your lodge, enjoy the fresh, cool mountain air, and gaze out over the often cloud-shrouded volcanic peaks. The anticipation for tomorrow is now palpable.

Day 9: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trekking
As the morning dew still clings to the dense forest canopy in the Virunga Volcanoes, the greatest adventure of your trip begins: gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After a short drive to the park offices and a professional briefing from experienced ranger guides, you will immerse yourself in the lush greenery of the mountain rainforest. Your ranger guides will follow the tracks of the scouts who set out at first light to find the gentle giants.
Then the moment arrives: the canopy opens up, and you will find yourself face to face with a wild gorilla family. For an hour, you will have the opportunity to observe the majestic silverback and his family up close as they go about their daily lives undisturbed.
Deeply moved by this encounter, you return to the lodge, where you can freshen up and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. You can spend the rest of the day relaxing in your accommodation and reflecting on the day’s experiences.

Day 10: Volcanoes– Kigali (travel time approx. 3 hours)
Enjoy one last Rwandan breakfast at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes. Afterward, you will embark your drive back to Kigali City. The drive south is another true highlight: breathtaking views of lush green coffee, tea, and banana plantations accompany you along the way. With a camera full of spectacular photos and a heart filled with awe for the history, nature, and people of this country, you will arrive at Kigali International Airport. Here, your guide will bid you farewell before you board your flight home or onward journey. We wish you a safe trip home!
