Your Itinerary In Details

Sup-Lake-Mutanda-2

At 7:00 am, your professional driver-guide will meet you in Kigali, either at the airport or your hotel. You then begin your journey to Uganda, heading to Mutanda Lake Resort. The drive takes approximately 5 to 5.5 hours, including the border crossing at Cyanika.

As you travel south-west, the landscape changes into rolling highlands and volcanic scenery. Lake Mutanda sits at the base of the Virunga Volcano range, a dramatic chain connecting Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This region borders Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the world’s most important habitats for mountain gorillas.

The lake area is rich in wildlife and birdlife. You may see kingfishers, the grey crowned crane, otters, frogs, and chameleons. The waters are clear and bilharzia-free, making swimming safe. In the afternoon, you can relax or enjoy optional activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing in a traditional dugout, or a gentle boat cruise for birdwatching and sunset views.

Uganda highlight tour

After an early breakfast at 5:30 am, you depart for a short drive of about 1 hour to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Your packed lunch is prepared by the lodge for the day. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, the Gorilla Habituation Experience allows up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. These groups are still getting used to human presence, under the careful supervision of expert researchers and rangers. The process is part of long-term conservation work, helping prepare gorillas for safe, low-impact tourism.

The experience begins with tracking fresh signs in the forest—footprints, broken vegetation, and nesting sites from the previous night. The trek can be demanding, moving through dense rainforest, steep slopes, and muddy trails. However, the reward is exceptional.

Once the gorillas are located, you spend up to four hours observing them at close range, usually about seven meters away. These semi-habituated groups are more natural and less predictable, which makes the encounter feel raw and authentic.

Your guides will brief you on strict safety etiquette. Calm movement, quiet observation, and respectful distance are essential. Occasionally, a silverback may display dominance, and your rangers will guide the group accordingly.

At times, you may simply observe their behavior—feeding, resting, or interacting within the family. This quiet connection is what makes the experience so powerful.

After the habituation session, you return to Mutanda Lake Resort to relax, enjoy dinner, and reflect on the day’s experience.
