Planning to visit the National Parks in Uganda? Exploring Uganda’s wilderness is surprisingly affordable than you might think. Entrance fees are generally lower than in neighbouring Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda, while the wildlife and landscapes are every bit worth the journey. Below, we explain everything you need to know about Uganda national parks entrance fees and how to arrange your permits.
*Sidenote: This guide focuses mainly on Uganda national parks fees and permits. If you are looking for more information about the national parks in Uganda, we recommend reading this blog or visiting this page instead.
Getting your park entrance permit is easy. You can pay when you arrive at the park gate. When you book a full safari with us, we take care of all the park entrance fees for you.
Travelling on a self-drive safari? Park fees can be paid by credit card. We still recommend carrying some cash in US dollars or Ugandan shillings. If the Uganda Wildlife Authority system is temporarily down, you will have another way to pay.
For gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, you do not pay a separate park entrance fee. It is already included in your trekking permit.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) sets the park entrance fees for Uganda’s national parks. The fees below are valid for 24 hours from the time of entry.
Tour company vehicles pay UGX 40,000 per entry at Murchison Falls National Park. And UGX 30,000 at other savannah national parks. This fee is charged per entry, not per 24 hours.
Our safari vehicles are registered in Uganda.
If you explore the park without a private-sector tour guide or UWA ranger guide:
The self-game drive fee is charged per vehicle, per day.
You can also explore the park in your own vehicle with a UWA ranger guide:
The fee is charged per half day.
Where available, you can hire a UWA game drive vehicle:
The minimum charge is equivalent to three people.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages public campsites inside the park. These campsites offer the basics you need for an overnight stay, including a pit latrine, water, firewood, a fireplace, a rubbish pit, and a thatched shelter with security.
A night at a UWA public campsite costs UGX 40,000 per person.
If you prefer something more private, you can choose wilderness camping. In Murchison Falls National Park, this costs USD 40 per person, per night and includes a night warden and firewood.
Uganda is possibly the best destination in the world to go on a primate trekking adventure. You can go on a gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking in the wild, or join a team of experts researching habituated gorillas, chimpanzees and golden monkeys.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues the permits, but only to Tour Operators. As a tourist, there is no possibility of visiting their headquarters in Kampala and arranging it yourself.
Greenway Nature Tours can arrange your gorilla and chimpanzee trekking permits or habituation experience for you when you confirm your tour or car rental booking with us in Uganda. For this service, we charge a handling fee of USD 20 per chimpanzee permit and USD 30 per gorilla permit.
You can read more about how to obtain your trekking permits here.
A guided nature walk is a great way to experience Uganda’s national parks from a different perspective. You are unlikely to come across big predators, but that is part of what makes the walk so relaxed.
You can take your time, notice the smaller details, and learn more about the plants, animals, and landscape from a UWA ranger. It is also a nice change from spending the whole safari in a vehicle.
For a complete overview of experiences and activities available in Uganda’s national parks, see the UWA tariff sheet.
