When people think of Africa, they often imagine dry savannas, drought, and dusty plains. But Uganda is very different. Water is everywhere here. In Uganda, we have the largest lake in Africa (Lake Victoria). The longest river on Earth, River Nile begins in Uganda and flows right through the country. So, during your tour of Uganda, you will inevitably encounter water. And you can do all kinds of fun activities on and around that water. We have listed six of our favorite water experiences in Uganda for you.
We have already mentioned Lake Victoria and the Nile River.
But Uganda has many more water-rich places to explore. Take Murchison Falls National Park, for example. Here you can enjoy some of the best boat safaris in Africa and watch the powerful waterfall up close. In Lake Mburo National Park, a beautiful lake sits right inside the park. It creates a peaceful setting for boat trips and wildlife viewing.
In Queen Elizabeth National Park, the famous Kazinga Channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George. It is one of the best places in Uganda to see hippos, crocodiles, and birds. Uganda also has Lake Albert, Lake Mutanda, Lake Bunyonyi, and Lake Edward, all rich in wildlife and scenic views. And beyond the lakes and rivers, you’ll also find vast wetlands.
The Nile River in Jinja offers some of the best water sports in Africa. You can go white-water rafting on fast, powerful rapids. Some sections reach Grade 5, which is among the most challenging levels in the world. It is exciting, fast, and full of adrenaline.
If you prefer something calmer, you can raft on gentler sections of the river. The experience is still fun, but more relaxed and safer. You can also go kayaking with a professional guide. This gives you more control and a closer connection to the water.
Another popular option is tubing. You sit in a large inflatable tube and float down the river with a group. It is easy, fun, and very social. On the Nile, there is something for everyone. From extreme adventure to peaceful drifting, you choose your own pace.
A boat safari in Murchison Falls National Park is one of the best ways to experience Uganda’s wildlife from the water.
As you cruise along the Nile River, you pass through lush green banks and wide-open views of the river. The scenery is stunning, but the wildlife is the real highlight.
You see hippos packed in groups along the water. You often spot elephants coming down to drink or bathe. Crocodiles lie still on the riverbanks, some reaching impressive sizes of up to 7 meters. With a bit of luck, you may also see giraffes near the shore. The sky is full of birds like kingfishers and African fish eagles.
While you are cruising around, it is teeming with hippos all around you.
There are different ways to enjoy this safari. You can join a larger shared boat with many guests. It is a good option, but less personal.
We prefer smaller private boats. They offer a more exclusive experience. You travel with your own guide and captain. The boat can move more freely and reach quieter spots. You also set your own pace. Food and drinks are often included, so you can relax and enjoy the river in comfort. It is wildlife viewing at its very best.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most toured national parks, and its boat safari is a true highlight. The park lies between Lake Edward and Lake George.
These two lakes are linked by the famous Kazinga Channel. This channel holds one of the highest concentrations of hippos in the world. You see them everywhere. In the water, along the banks, and sometimes stacked in large groups. A boat trip here is full of life.
You also see huge Nile crocodiles resting in the sun. Buffaloes gather at the water’s edge. Elephants often come down to drink and spray each other with water. Birdlife is incredible, with kingfishers, herons, pelicans, and fish eagles all around you.
The Kazinga Channel Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park holds one of the highest concentrations of hippos in the world.
You can join a larger shared boat. It is a good experience, but often busy. A private boat gives you a very different feeling. It is quieter and more flexible. You move at your own pace. You stop when you want. You get closer to the animals without disturbance. It is more personal, more relaxed, and often more rewarding.
The shoebill is a beautiful bird to behold. To find it, you travel into a vast swamp. You explore it in a small wooden boat. A local guide pushes the boat forward using a long pole. It is a simple but unforgettable experience. You move slowly through calm channels covered with lilies and reeds. The swamp is alive with birds.
Every turn brings new sounds and movement. Then you see it. The shoebill stork. Tall, still, and almost unreal. It stands over 1.5 meters high. At first glance, you may think it is a statue. It looks ancient and powerful. This experience takes place in Mabamba Swamp, one of the best places in the world to see this rare species. Whether you are a serious birder or a casual traveler, this is a must-do activity in Uganda.
When you see the shoebill for the first time, you think: is this real, or has someone put a statue here?
In eastern Uganda, you find one of the most scenic waterfall regions in the country. This is the home of Sipi Falls. The area sits on the slopes of Mount Elgon and is famous for its green landscapes and fertile land. Coffee and bananas grow all around the falls.
Local farms shape the scenery and give the region a warm, lived-in feel. During your hike, you explore three different waterfalls. Each one has its own viewpoint and character. The highest drop is about 100 meters. Is it the most dramatic experience in Uganda? Maybe not.
But it is one of the most peaceful and beautiful. What makes it special is the mix of nature and culture. You walk through farmland, meet local communities, and enjoy wide views over the valley. If you have extra time in your itinerary, Sipi Falls is well worth adding.
Lake Mutanda feels like a hidden paradise in the far southwest of Uganda. It sits at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet. The scenery is dramatic and peaceful at the same time.
Around the lake, you find lush forests and misty hills. These forests are home to the endangered mountain gorilla. That makes Lake Mutanda a perfect base for gorilla trekking adventures in the region. From Mutanda Lake Resort, you can enjoy a wide range of water activities. You can swim in the clean, bilharzia-free waters.
You can relax on wooden jetties and simply enjoy the view. If you want more action, you can try stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, or even sailing. For a more local touch, you can paddle a traditional dugout canoe. You can also take a motorboat ride across the lake. It is perfect for birdwatching or just drifting in silence with a glass of your favourite drink.
There are plenty of other activities you can do on and around the water. Just relaxing on the shore. Or sport fishing – there is plenty of room for that on the Ugandan lakes.
