Tour Overview

Take on an unforgettable 8-day journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. You follow the Machame Route, also known as the “Whisky Route.”

It is one of the most scenic and exciting ways to reach the top. The trek is challenging. But you do not need climbing skills. You just need good fitness, determination, and a strong mindset. Each day feels different. You start in lush rainforest. Then move into open moorland. Higher up, the landscape turns into a dry, alpine desert. The air gets thinner. The adventure becomes real.

You are supported by experienced local guides and porters every step of the way. They carry your gear, set up camp, and keep you going.

At the end, you reach the snow-capped Uhuru Peak at 5,896 meters, the highest point in Africa. You stand above the clouds. The feeling is powerful. You made it. The roof of Africa is yours.

Your Itinerary In Details

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will meet a Greenway Nature Tours representative, and transfer to the hotel in Moshi Town. The hotel will offer all the essentials for a comfortable stay.

In the evening there will be a briefing from our representative, who will also make sure you are ready to begin the climb. After the briefing, fuel up on a hearty dinner and get a good night’s rest, ready to start your climb tomorrow!

After breakfast, you meet your guides and mountain support crew. You take time to check your gear and make final preparations. Then you drive to Machame Gate, the south-western entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park. At the gate, you complete simple formalities. Permits are checked, and you register with the park authorities. Once everything is ready, your trek begins.

The trail starts in dense rainforest. It is green, humid, and full of life. Rain is common here, so waterproof clothing is essential. The path can be muddy and slippery, adding to the adventure as you hike toward Machame Camp. This is your first day at altitude, so it is important to take care of your body. Drink plenty of water throughout the day—at least 4 liters, in small and regular sips.

Altitude can affect everyone differently. Some trekkers choose to take preventive medication. It is best to speak with your doctor before the trip to understand what works for you. At night, your body begins to adjust to the altitude. Breathing may feel different, and mild symptoms like headaches or discomfort can occur. This is normal, but you should always listen to your body. If you feel unwell at any point, inform your guide immediately. Your safety and comfort are always the priority.

Trekking time: 5-6 hours

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

After breakfast, you begin your trek to Shira Camp, your second high-altitude stop on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail slowly leaves the rainforest behind. The landscape opens up. For the first time, you see wide views across the Shira Plateau. It feels vast and wild.

The walk is not technical, but the altitude starts to be noticeable. You may feel slower. That is normal. Take your time. Keep a steady pace and listen to your body. On arrival at Shira Camp, you enjoy lunch and take some time to rest. Later in the afternoon, you head out for an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower, gaining about 400 meters in altitude. After the hike, you return to camp for a warm dinner.

Please Note: The acclimatization hike is very important. It is not difficult, but it helps your body adjust to the altitude. Take it seriously. It greatly improves your chances of reaching the summit and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

After breakfast, you leave Shira Camp and continue toward one of the most important points on the route; Lava Tower at 4,600 meters. The trail includes several ascents and descents, making this one of the more demanding days on Mount Kilimanjaro.

As you climb higher, the altitude becomes more noticeable. It is normal to feel some discomfort. You take your time and move at a steady pace. At Lava Tower, you stop for lunch and spend about one to two hours. This is very important for acclimatization and helps your body adjust to the height. After lunch, you descend to Barranco Camp. The change in altitude often helps you feel better.

From camp, you get your first view of the famous Barranco Wall. It looks steep and impressive, but the trail is straightforward and manageable. Tomorrow, you climb it. And yes, it is much easier than it looks.

Trekking time: 6-8 hours

Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)

You start early today. After breakfast, you begin the climb up the famous Barranco Wall on Mount Kilimanjaro. It looks steep, but the trail is manageable. The climb takes about an hour. Starting early helps you avoid crowds and keep a steady pace. At the top, you take a short break. The views of Kibo volcano are stunning. It is a perfect moment for photos.

You then continue toward Karanga Camp. This section has several ups and downs, and it can feel challenging. Your guides set a comfortable pace and support you all the way. At Karanga, you stop for a warm lunch and some rest. In the afternoon, you make your final ascent to Barafu Camp. This is your base for the summit push. After arrival, you have an early dinner. The rest of the day is for rest. Sleep as much as you can. Your summit attempt begins later that night.

Trekking time: 8-10 hours

Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)

Your final push begins at night from Barafu Camp. You climb slowly toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The trail is not technical, but the altitude makes it very demanding. Every step feels harder. You move slowly, guided by your support team. Each pair is closely monitored by a guide to ensure your safety and well-being throughout the climb. Reaching the summit is an incredible moment. You stand above the clouds as the sun rises over Africa. After celebrating, you may walk to a nearby glacier before beginning your descent. You return to Barafu Camp for a short rest of about two hours. Then you continue down to Millennium Camp.

Please Note: Most accidents happen during the descent. Stay focused. Watch your footing carefully, as the trail can be steep and loose.

Trekking Time: 8–12 hours

Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)

Millennium Camp sits in the lush rainforest on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. When you wake up, the air feels richer and easier to breathe. You feel the relief of lower altitude, and the pride of reaching the summit. After a warm breakfast, you continue your descent to Mweka Gate. The trail passes through dense forest, with a completely different atmosphere from the higher slopes. At the gate, your team gathers to celebrate your achievement. You sign the park’s guestbook and take time to reflect on the journey. You then receive your summit certificate, a lasting reminder of your climb. Finally, you transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned rest.

Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Distance: 12 km (7.4 miles)
