Are you planning a short Uganda tour? One of the parks you can visit is Murchison Falls National Park. It is the largest national park in Uganda and its landscape is breathtaking. It features the Nile River and the world’s strongest waterfall. It is also teeming with wildlife. There are leopards, hyenas, lions, elephants, antelopes, buffaloes, and giraffes. You will find huge Nile crocodiles that can grow up to 7 meters long and large number of hippos. There are also 450 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork. It is a birdwatching paradise.
During this 3-day tour, you will visit the top of the falls for photoshoots and enjoy classic game drives. You will also enjoy a boat cruise along the Nile to the bottom of waterfalls. You see hippos, crocodiles, and elephants on the banks. The boat safari is an activity not to be missed. You can do it in two ways: on a shared boat or a private boat. The private boat is slightly more expensive, but you get an enormous amount of freedom in return. You have your own guide, and you can stop wherever you want. If a group of elephants is in the water and you want to watch them for half an hour, you can.
You will also have other optional activities including rhino tracking on foot in Ziwa Rhino Ranch and chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest.
Early morning you will pick you from any place of your choice in Kampala or Entebbe and leave for Murchison Falls National Park. The journey takes about 6 hours drive, but you will have several stops along the way to stretch your legs and have lunch. On arrival, you will immediately take a spectacular hike at the top of the waterfall. After the hike, you will drive on to your lodge, where you can enjoy the sounds of the animals around you and the beautiful view during the late afternoon and evening.
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is the largest Ugandan wildlife park and is split in two by the mighty River Nile. The landscape varies from dense rainforest in the hilly southwestern part to flat savannas in the northwest. Due to its location on the Nile, Murchison Falls is one of the greenest parks in Africa. Perhaps the most impressive thing the Nile encounters on its long journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea is the Murchison Falls.
Murchison Waterfall Walk – Afternoon
Before driving to the lodge, you first make a short photo stop at the top of the Murchison Falls. At the top of falls, you take a walk to view this natural spectacle from various vantage points. You see the waterfalls up close and feel the power of the Nile plunging with immense force through a gorge barely seven meters wide into the depths. If time permits, you can walk a little further down to see the entire waterfall—a magnificent sight!

Today is entirely dedicated to all the wildlife and natural beauty that Murchison Falls National Park has to offer. In the early morning, you will go on a game drive, and in the afternoon, you will take an amazing boat safari on the Nile in search of hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and with a bit of luck, even bathing elephants! At the end of the day, you will be dropped off at your accommodation feeling satisfied.
Game Drive – Morning
After an early breakfast, you drive towards the delta area for the safari. The sun is rising and it is still cool, the best time for a safari across the savannah plains. Game drives in Murchison Falls National Park focus on the area northwest of the Nile. The green, rolling landscape is dominated by the characteristic Borassus palms, whose fruits are a delicacy for the savannah elephant. In addition to elephants, you will look for giraffes, hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, various types of antelopes, and many tropical bird species.
Boat Safari to the base of the falls – Afternoon
Under the watchful eyes of crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, and monkeys, you sail slowly along the historic Nile River. Monkeys betray your approach, and waterbirds are busy fishing. Elephants and other wildlife are regularly spotted coming to quench their thirst along the banks of the mighty Nile. The trip eventually takes you to the foot of the 45-meter-high and famous waterfall (Murchison Falls). The trip takes approximately three hours. (We recommend sitting on the left side of the boat, as you sail along the left bank.)
Private boat safari– Morning (optional)
You can book the boat cruise in a private boat. This offers enormous added value compared to the large general boat, as a small boat allows you to get much closer to the wildlife. You also set the pace yourself, and it is wonderful to share this experience exclusively with your own group.

Semi-Luxury: Murchison River Lodge – Thatched Cottage

In the morning, you can choose between a game drive or a rhino tracking adventure in the nearby Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch. You can also (optionally) choose to go for chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest or take a boat cruise to the delta area of the Nile Rive. After your morning activity, you drive back to Entebbe or Kampala. This is the end of your trip. We hope you had a fantastic time!
Game drive – morning
After breakfast, you will drive once again to the delta area for the safari. This morning is dedicated to different safari tracks to discover even more of the park. Naturally, your guide will also go looking for predators if they were not spotted during the game drive.
Boat safari Delta Lake Albert (optional)
In addition to the regular boat safari to the waterfall, it is also possible to take a boat safari through the delta area in this park. The delta area is located where the Victoria Nile flows into Lake Albert and subsequently into the Albert Nile. This delta area looks like a smaller version of the famous Okavango Delta (Botswana) and is teeming with wildlife, such as hippos, crocodiles, and bathing elephants. This boat safari is also a dream for bird lovers. Special birds such as the Saddle-billed Stork, the African Giant Kingfisher, and the prehistoric-looking Shoebill are regularly spotted.
Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest (Optional)
Budongo Forest is a southern extension of Murchison Falls National Park. It is one of Africa’s best and most underrated chimp tracking destinations. It is home to over 700 wild chimpanzees. Today, you can enjoy a walk through this tropical forest, in search of the habituated chimpanzee family. Your guide will explain to you more about the animals and plants species that you encounter on your way. As you tread along the forest paths, keep your eyes peeled for the majestic Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, lively Red-tailed Monkeys, and an array of vibrant bird species. The hike typically spans 2 to 4 hours, adapting to the movement of the chimpanzees as they traverse their natural habitat. Upon locating the chimps, marvel at their behaviors as you spend an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch in awe as they eat, rest, and play, offering you a rare glimpse into their daily lives amidst the lush surroundings of Budongo Forest.
Ziwa Rhino Tracking (Optional)
On your way back to Kampala / Entebbe, you make a stop at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch. It is the best place to see wild rhinos in Uganda. You adventure will start with a briefing. After that, you enter the ranch by car. Then, you walk the final stretch to a group of rhinos – that makes the experience at Ziwa extra special. And don’t worry: you will have a ranger with you. They know the animals inside out. Rhinos are enormous; an adult male weighs more than 2,000 kilos. When you spot them up close during your walk, that is when you truly see how big they are. Despite their size, rhinos are seen by most people as very likeable animals. If you look closely into their eyes, there is something moving about them. You see a very strong, large animal. But also a super vulnerable animal. The trek to the rhinos takes about 2 hours and you spend one hours with them.
