Why Are They Called the Big 5?

The term “Big Five” started in the 19th and early 20th centuries during Africa’s big game hunting era. Hunters used it to describe the five animals that were the most dangerous and difficult to hunt on foot. These animals were not necessarily the largest, but they were the most challenging to track and kill.

Today, the Big Five refers to the five animals most tourists want to see and photograph on safari. Spotting them can be tricky, as some are rare or shy. Buffaloes, lions, and elephants are easier to find because they live in herds or groups. Lions live in prides and can be seen in many parks.

Leopards are harder to spot. They are mostly solitary and hunt at night or during twilight. During the day, they often hide in trees or dense bushes. Rhinos are the rarest of the Big Five and are only found in a few protected areas. To see all five animals on a safari, you need to visit the right parks, be patient, and have a keen eye.

How dangerous Are The Big 5 Animals?

Buffaloes, rhinoceroses, and elephants are very powerful and protective. They usually do not run away quickly if they are injured or if people come too close. Instead, they may charge and defend themselves. Leopards are different. They are secretive and stay hidden in thick bushes or up in trees. They are stealthy hunters and mostly hunt at night. Along with lions, leopards are carnivores and can be dangerous predators. For both animals, humans are potential threats if approached too closely.

Endangered Species

Many of the Big Five animals are at risk because of hunting and the loss of their natural habitats. Four of the five are listed on the International Red List of Threatened Species. The buffalo is the only one that is not endangered. It is widespread and has a healthy population. Lions and leopards are considered vulnerable. Their numbers are dropping quickly, and they could become endangered if threats continue.

Elephants are also highly vulnerable. Conservation efforts have helped their numbers slowly increase, but they are still at risk from poaching for ivory and shrinking habitats. Rhinos are in the most danger. They are seriously endangered and face a very high risk of extinction. Protecting rhinos is a top priority for wildlife conservation.

Where Can You Find the Big 5 in Africa?

Fortunately, the Big Five can still be found in several African countries. These animals live in national parks and protected areas where conservation efforts are strong. Below is an overview of the best countries and parks to see the Big Five. All the destinations mentioned are part of the Greenway Nature Tours program.

Kenya Big 5 Safari

Lions can be seen in most of Kenya’s national parks. The most powerful and aggressive lions are in Tsavo, where the males often have no manes. The largest lions are found in the Masai Mara. Elephants are widespread across Kenya, with the best chances of spotting them in Amboseli National Park. Here, the elephants are famous for their reddish-brown color. Tsavo, Masai Mara, and Samburu also have healthy elephant populations.

The Masai Mara is home to the largest buffalo herds. For white rhinos, Lake Nakuru is the top choice. Black rhinos are best spotted in the Masai Mara. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is another excellent location to see rhinos. Leopards are found in several parks, including Nakuru. Interestingly, a black leopard was spotted in Laikipia County recently for the first time in 100 years.

Buffaloes In Kidepo Valley National Park

Africa Big 5 Safari in Tanzania

Northern Tanzania is a wildlife paradise. The Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Crater have some of the highest wildlife densities in Africa. The Serengeti is the best place to see lions. Tarangire is ideal for spotting elephants. Rhinos can be found in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Leopards are present but harder to spot, while buffaloes are abundant.

Southern Tanzania offers a more remote and less crowded safari experience. Ruaha and Katavi National Parks are pristine and untouched, giving visitors the chance to see four of the Big Five almost alone. Nyerere National Park, formerly Selous, is another excellent but less visited park. Rhinos live here, though they are rare and hidden in dense vegetation. These parks also give you a chance to see the rare African wild dog, a highly sought-after animal for wildlife photographers, even though it is not part of the Big Five.

Uganda Big 5 Safari

Uganda also has the Big Five spread across several national parks. Lions, leopards, and buffaloes can be found in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley, and Lake Mburo National Parks. Murchison Falls, Kidepo, and Queen Elizabeth are the best locations to see elephants. The only place to see rhinos in Uganda is the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch near Murchison Falls National Park.
Uganda goes a step further. It is home to the Big Six, which includes the mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It is also home to the Big Seven, which adds the chimpanzees of Kibale Forest National Park. This makes Uganda a truly unique destination for wildlife lovers.
