Why Zanzibar Is the Perfect Addition to Your Uganda Trip?

In Uganda, we have almost every beauty and natural wonder you can imagine. Mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, waterfalls, lakes, rainforest jungles, vast savannahs, and incredible wildlife. But we have no ocean, no sea. And yet, you can end your Uganda adventure on the beach. The tropical beaches of Zanzibar are just around the corner, an hour’s flight away. It is the perfect place to slow down, relax, and enjoy a completely different setting before heading home. A Uganda and Zanzibar combination gives you the best of both worlds: unforgettable wildlife experiences followed by days of sun, sea, and relaxation. We would be happy to help you plan the perfect combination. Simply get in touch to discuss the possibilities.

Zanzibar

What makes Zanzibar such a wonderful addition to your Uganda trip?

One of the biggest advantages of combining Uganda and Zanzibar is how easy it is.

Once you are in East Africa, Zanzibar is never far away. From Uganda, you can reach this tropical island in just a few hours, without losing valuable vacation time. Suppose you are returning to Entebbe from one of the Uganda National parks; you stay for a night and fly on to Zanzibar the next morning.

By the afternoon, you could already be walking along a white-sand beach or relaxing beside the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. It is a seamless transition from adventure to relaxation. One moment you are tracking gorillas or searching for wildlife on safari. The next, you are enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of a tropical island. That is what makes Zanzibar such a perfect ending to a Uganda safari.

8 Days Best of Zanzibar

Zanzibar has a rich culture

Zanzibar is more than just the beautiful blue sea, coral reefs, and white sand beaches. It is an island where different cultures, traditions, and influences come together. The atmosphere is relaxed, even more so than in Uganda. The climate is warmer, and life moves at a slower pace.

Many people in Zanzibar are Muslim, and Arabic influences can be seen throughout the island. You will notice this in the architecture, the culture, and especially the food. Seafood plays a big role in local cuisine. Fresh fish, prawns, octopus, and other seafood dishes are widely available.

This is very different from Uganda, where seafood is far less common. By combining Uganda and Zanzibar, you experience two completely different sides of East Africa in one trip. First the wildlife, landscapes, and adventure of Uganda. Then the culture, beaches, and laid-back island life of Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Stone Town

Plenty of Things to do in Zanzibar

We usually keep your Zanzibar stay a little more flexible. Of course, we arrange a beautiful place for you to stay. But we often leave much of the itinerary open. After all, Zanzibar is a place to slow down, relax, and decide each day what you feel like doing.  But, if you want to get out and explore, there is plenty to discover. Here are three of our favorite suggestions:

1. Explore Stone Town:

Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar. It is a fascinating place full of character, narrow alleyways, and beautiful old buildings. Much of its architecture has remained unchanged for centuries. As you wander through the streets, you can feel the island’s rich history and unique mix of cultures.

2. Join a Spice Tour:

Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island for good reason. Thanks to its climate and long trading history, a wide variety of spices grow here. A spice tour is a fun way to visit local plantations and learn where cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and many other spices come from.

3. Get Out on the Water:

The ocean is one of Zanzibar’s greatest attractions. You can go snorkeling, diving, or kitesurfing. Or simply step aboard a traditional wooden dhow and sail along the coast with a cold drink in hand while the sun begins to set.

Small, picturesque accommodations

We know Uganda inside and out. And we can confidently say the same about Zanzibar. We carefully select the places where we send our travelers. These are accommodations we have personally visited and know well. In Zanzibar, we prefer small-scale resorts with character. Places right on the beach. Places with a relaxed atmosphere, a great location, and a genuine sense of charm. Not crowded resorts, but places where you can truly unwind and enjoy the island. Some of our favorite accommodations include:

  • Mr Kahawa
  • Baladin Beach Hotel
  • The Loop Beach Resort
  • Breezes Beach Club & Spa
  • Mwezi Boutique Resort

How much does a tour of Uganda cost, ending with Zanzibar?

Adding Zanzibar to your Uganda trip is often more affordable than people expect.

In fact, extending your journey by a few days in Zanzibar can sometimes work out slightly cheaper than spending those same extra days on safari in Uganda. The reason is simple. In Uganda, part of your budget goes towards things like a private guide, safari vehicle, fuel, and park fees. In Zanzibar, those costs do not apply. You are mainly paying for accommodation, meals, and any activities you choose to do. As for the length of your stay, we usually recommend spending between 4 and 6 nights in Zanzibar.

Less than 4 nights often feels too short, especially after a busy safari.

More than 6 nights is certainly possible, particularly if you want to fully relax or take part in activities such as kitesurfing, diving, or other water sports. For most travelers, however, 4 to 6 nights is the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is fun to do on Zanzibar?

Many people come to Zanzibar to relax, but there is much more to the island than beautiful beaches. A visit to Stone Town is highly recommended.

This historic town is full of character, with narrow streets, old buildings, bustling markets, and a fascinating history. It offers a completely different side of Zanzibar from the beach resorts the island is famous for.

Zanzibar is also a fantastic destination for snorkeling and diving. Just offshore, you will find colorful coral reefs teeming with tropical fish and other marine life. Traditional dhow sailing trips are another popular way to experience the island and its beautiful coastline.

If you would like to learn more about local culture, a spice tour is well worth doing.

Zanzibar is known around the world as the Spice Island. During a visit to a spice plantation, you will discover where cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and many other spices are grown. It is this mix of culture, nature, adventure, and relaxation that makes Zanzibar such a special destination.

2. Do you offer other beach closing options besides Zanzibar?

Yes, we do. While Zanzibar is by far the most popular beach extension after a Uganda safari, it is certainly not the only option. East Africa is blessed with a beautiful coastline, and there are several wonderful places where you can relax after your adventure.

Upon request, we can also arrange beach stays along the Kenyan coast. Two excellent options are Diani Beach and Watamu.

Diani Beach is famous for its long stretches of white sand, comfortable resorts, and easy accessibility. It is a great choice if you are looking for a classic tropical beach holiday.

Watamu offers a different atmosphere. It is smaller, quieter, and has a more laid-back feel. It is particularly popular with travelers who enjoy snorkeling and diving, thanks to the beautiful coral reefs just offshore.

That said, most travelers still choose Zanzibar. The island offers much more than beaches alone. Its unique blend of culture, history, tropical scenery, and island life makes it feel like a destination in its own right rather than simply a place to relax after a safari.

The best choice ultimately depends on your itinerary, travel style, and budget. That is why we always look at the bigger picture and recommend the beach destination that fits your journey best.

3. What Kind of Accommodations Do You Use on Zanzibar?

On Zanzibar, we prefer small-scale boutique hotels and atmospheric accommodations that fit perfectly with the style of our Uganda tours. Rather than large all-inclusive resorts, we choose places with character, personal service, and a wonderful location. Places where you truly feel that you are on Zanzibar, not just at another beach resort somewhere in the world.

Depending on your preferences, we can arrange anything from a luxury beachfront retreat to a stylish boutique hotel or a relaxed accommodation closer to local life.

Because every trip is tailor-made, we look beyond budget and comfort alone. We also consider the atmosphere that suits you best and the type of experience you are looking for.

The result is a Zanzibar stay that feels like a natural extension of your Uganda adventure, rather than a separate trip altogether.

4. Is Zanzibar Suitable for Families with Children?

Things to do in Zanzibar Tanzania

Absolutely. Zanzibar is a wonderful destination for families and the perfect way to end a Uganda adventure. Many families love this combination.

Uganda offers excitement, wildlife, boat trips, unforgettable gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking experiences. Zanzibar then provides the perfect opportunity to slow down and relax by the sea.

For families, we usually recommend the quieter parts of the island, especially along the east coast. The atmosphere is relaxed, the beaches are wide and uncrowded, and many accommodations are well suited to families.

One of the great things about Zanzibar is its flexibility. You can spend your days relaxing by the pool or on the beach, or head out to explore the island. Visit historic Stone Town, take a boat trip, go snorkeling, or simply enjoy quality time together by the ocean.

It is this combination of adventure and relaxation that makes Uganda and Zanzibar such a memorable family holiday. A trip filled with exciting experiences, beautiful scenery, and plenty of time to unwind together.

5. Can you also arrange excursions and activities on Zanzibar?

Yes, of course. We can arrange a wide range of activities on Zanzibar, depending on your interests and how you would like to spend your time on the island.

You might choose to go snorkeling or diving among colorful coral reefs, explore the historic streets of Stone Town, visit one of Zanzibar’s famous spice plantations, or sail across the Indian Ocean on a traditional dhow. Other activities, such as dolphin excursions, can also be arranged.

That said, many travelers choose Zanzibar for a different reason.

After an active safari in Uganda, it can be wonderful to slow down for a few days. No schedule. No early mornings. Just time to relax. A good book, a walk along the beach, and the sound of the ocean are often all you need.

That is why we always look for the right balance together. Some travelers want to explore every corner of the island. Others simply want to unwind before heading home.

Most people find that the perfect Zanzibar experience lies somewhere in between.

6. What Makes Zanzibar Different from Other Beach Destinations?

Zanzibar is much more than a place to relax on the beach. Yes, you will find white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. But what truly makes Zanzibar special is its culture, history, and unique atmosphere.

The island has been shaped by African, Arabic, and Indian influences for centuries. You can see this everywhere. In the architecture. In the food. In the scent of spices drifting through the air. And in the daily life of the island itself.

Nowhere is this more visible than in Stone Town. Its narrow alleyways, historic buildings, lively markets, and fascinating stories offer a glimpse into Zanzibar’s rich past.

Beyond Stone Town, there is even more to discover. Traditional fishing villages, wooden dhow boats sailing along the coast, and spice plantations all add to the island’s character and charm.

It is this combination of culture, history, and tropical beauty that sets Zanzibar apart from many other beach destinations. For many travelers, it is the perfect way to end a Uganda safari. Not simply as a place to relax, but as a destination with its own unique story to tell.

7. In which part of Zanzibar do your travelers usually stay?

For most travelers, we choose a stay on the east coast of Zanzibar, for example around Paje or Jambiani. This part of the island is known for its vast white beaches, clear turquoise water, and relaxed atmosphere.

What we particularly like about it is that it still feels relatively small-scale here. You won’t find large hotel complexes, but rather many atmospheric boutique hotels and small-scale accommodations that fit well with the character of a tour through Uganda.

In addition, the east coast offers a nice balance between tranquility and opportunities for activity. Whether that be a beach walk at low tide, a snorkeling trip, a visit to a local village, or simply an afternoon relaxing with a view of the Indian Ocean.

Naturally, we assess what suits you best for each trip. Some travelers are primarily looking for peace and quiet, while others prefer a bit more liveliness or activities nearby. That is why we always choose a place that aligns with your wishes and the atmosphere of the rest of the trip.

8. How many days in Zanzibar do you recommend after a tour of Uganda?

For most travelers, we recommend between 3 and 6 nights on Zanzibar. This often proves to be just enough to truly unwind after an active tour of Uganda and let all the impressions sink in.

After days filled with safaris, gorilla trekking, and adventure, it is wonderful to switch to a different pace for a while. A few days on the beach, good food, a warm climate, and no alarm clock going off before sunrise.

The length of the ideal stay naturally depends on your preferences. Travelers primarily seeking relaxation often opt for 3 to 4 nights. Those who enjoy diving, snorkeling, kitesurfing, or simply want to spend more time on the beach regularly stay 5 to 7 nights or even longer.

When putting together the trip, we always look for the right balance. Zanzibar should feel like a valuable conclusion to the tour, not a mandatory extra. That is why, for each trip, we advise on what best suits your pace and travel style.

From where do you fly to Zanzibar during the tour?

In most cases, you will fly from Entebbe International Airport to Zanzibar. Depending on the chosen route and available connections, this will be via a direct flight or with a short layover, for example in Nairobi.

When putting together the trip, we look not only at the flight itself, but especially at how it fits into the overall program. After an active tour of Uganda, you don’t want to end with unnecessarily long travel days or complicated connections.

That is why we align the flights with the pace of the trip and ensure that the transition from safari and adventure to beach and relaxation is as smooth as possible. This way, Zanzibar does not feel like a separate addition, but a logical continuation and the perfect, relaxed conclusion to the tour of Uganda.

Why do many travelers choose a combination of Uganda and Zanzibar?

The combination of Uganda and Zanzibar brings together two completely different travel experiences. While Uganda revolves around adventure, nature, and wildlife, Zanzibar is known for relaxation, white beaches, and the tropical atmosphere of the Indian Ocean.

During a tour of Uganda, the days are often filled with safaris, gorilla trekking, encounters with chimpanzees, and impressive landscapes. This makes the trip special, but also intense.

That is precisely why many travelers choose to end their trip on Zanzibar. A few days on the beach, a calm sea, good food, and no plans. Just savoring everything you have experienced.

In addition, the combination is practically easy to arrange thanks to the flight connections between East Africa and Zanzibar. As a result, it doesn’t feel like two separate holidays, but like one complete trip with the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.

Besides Zanzibar, ending your trip on the beach in Kenya is also a good option. We can arrange this for you as well.
