Your journey begins in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide from Greenway Nature Tours Africa. They will assist you with your luggage and give you a short briefing about the safari ahead. If you arrive early or spent the previous night in Kigali, you may choose to take an optional city tour. One of the most meaningful places to visit is the Kigali Genocide Memorial. This powerful site tells the story of Rwanda’s past and honors the lives lost during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. It is a moving and educational experience that helps visitors understand the strength and resilience of the Rwandan people.
After the city visit, you will begin your scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park. The drive takes about 2 to 3 hours and covers roughly 115 kilometers. Along the way, you will enjoy stunning views of Rwanda’s famous green hills, farmlands, and small villages. Rwanda is often called “The Land of a Thousand Hills,” and today you will see why. Upon arrival in the Volcanoes region, you will check in at your lodge. The lodge is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and offers amazing views of the Virunga Volcanoes. You will wake up early and enjoy breakfast at the lodge. After breakfast, you will head to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing on golden monkey tracking. Golden monkeys are playful, energetic primates with bright golden fur. They live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains and are found only in this region. With the guidance of experienced rangers, you will enter the forest in search of these charming creatures. The trek usually lasts between 2 and 6 hours, depending on their location. Watching golden monkeys jump from tree to tree and interact with each other is a joyful and lively experience. You will have time to observe and take photos.
After the trek, you will return to the lodge for lunch. Later, you will begin your journey to Uganda. The drive to Lake Mutanda takes about 4 hours and passes through beautiful countryside. You will cross the Cyanika border, where your guide will assist with all border procedures. As you approach Lake Mutanda, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Rolling hills, volcanic peaks, and calm waters welcome you. Lake Mutanda is located in southwestern Uganda, at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa. You will arrive at your lakeside lodge in the late afternoon. Relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as the sun sets over the lake.

Today is the most anticipated day of your safari. After an early breakfast at around 6:00 am, you will set off on a short drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the oldest and most biologically rich rainforests in Africa. This is the home of the endangered mountain gorillas and the setting for a life-changing experience. Before leaving the lodge, you will receive a packed lunch prepared by Mutanda Lake Resort to enjoy later in the forest. On arrival at the park headquarters, you will meet your professional ranger guides. They will give you a detailed briefing on gorilla trekking rules, safety guidelines, and conservation efforts. You will also be assigned to a specific gorilla family that you will visit.
With your rangers leading the way, you will enter the dense rainforest. The trek follows narrow forest paths, thick vegetation, and sometimes steep slopes. The hike can be physically demanding, but it moves at a comfortable pace. Along the way, your guide will point out forest plants, animal tracks, and birdlife, adding depth to the experience. Then comes the magical moment. Suddenly, the forest opens up, and you find yourself face to face with a mountain gorilla family in their natural home. You will spend one unforgettable hour observing them. Watch the powerful silverback calmly watching over his family. See mothers gently caring for their babies. Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park, nearly 2,000 km² in size, lies in the Rift Valley, bordered to the north by the Rwenzori Mountains and to the west by Lake Edward. Central to this nature reserve is the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lakes Edward and George. You can enjoy fantastic boat safaris here. West of the Kazinga Channel lies a landscape of magnificent volcanic craters. The Kyambura Gap is a vast chasm in the savannah landscape, home to rainforest and chimpanzees. Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to elephants, buffalo, topi, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, and many more. More than 600 bird species live there.

Your day begins early with an exciting morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s richest and most diverse wildlife areas. The early hours are the best time to spot animals, as the park slowly wakes up and predators are still active. You will spend about 3 to 4 hours exploring the open plains along the Kasenyi tracks, a well-known wildlife corridor. As the sun rises, large herds of elephants and buffalo move across the savannah. You will also see many antelope species, including Uganda kob, topi, and bushbuck, grazing peacefully in the golden grass.
With a bit of luck, you may spot a leopard resting in a tree or moving silently through the bushes. These shy cats are often seen early in the morning. Another special highlight is the giant forest hog, the largest wild pig in the world, which is commonly seen in this part of the park. After the game drive, you return to the lodge for lunch and some time to relax before the afternoon activity.
Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
In the afternoon, you will head to the Kazinga Channel for a memorable 2-hour boat safari. This natural waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George and is one of the best places in Africa to see wildlife from the water. As your boat gently moves along the channel, you will witness one of the highest concentrations of hippos on the continent. Hundreds of them rest in the water, grunt loudly, and interact with each other. Along the shores, elephants and buffalo come down to drink and cool off, offering excellent photo opportunities.
You will also see Nile crocodiles lying quietly at the water’s edge, waiting patiently for their next meal. Large water monitor lizards bask in the sun, barely moving as the boat passes by. The surrounding grasslands are often filled with waterbuck and Uganda kob grazing calmly. Bird lovers will be amazed by the variety of birdlife. Look out for African fish eagles, colorful kingfishers, herons, storks, and many other water birds. The Kazinga Channel is a true paradise for birdwatching.
Transfer to Kibale National Park
After the boat safari, you will begin your journey north toward Kibale National Park, a drive of about two hours. The route is scenic and peaceful, with views of tea plantations, villages, and the impressive Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon. You will arrive at your forest lodge in the evening, just in time for dinner. Settle into your comfortable cottage and enjoy the sounds of the forest around you. After an early breakfast, you will drive a short distance to the Kanyanchu Tourism Centre, located about 10 minutes from your lodge. This is the main starting point for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park. The activity begins at 8:00 am, so arrival is timely.
At the centre, you will meet the experienced park rangers who will guide you during the trek. They will give a clear briefing about the forest, the chimpanzees, and the rules to follow during the encounter. After the briefing, you will enter the forest in search of chimpanzees, our closest living relatives. The trek lasts between 3 and 6 hours, depending on the movement of the chimpanzees. Kibale Forest is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, and the success rate of seeing them is very high. The chimpanzees here are fully habituated, which allows you to observe them closely and take photographs.
When you finally find them, you will spend one full hour watching their daily life. You may see them feeding on fruit, swinging through the trees, grooming each other, or calling loudly across the forest. Their intelligence, expressions, and social behavior are fascinating. This is a lively and emotional wildlife experience that many travelers remember as a highlight of their safari.
Kibale Forest is also rich in other wildlife. Although many animals are shy, you may spot bushbuck, blue duiker, warthog, sitatunga, forest hog, or bushpig. With exceptional luck, you might even encounter African buffalo, leopard, forest-adapted elephants, mongooses, otters, or a lion. The forest floor and streams are home to amphibians, reptiles, and colorful butterflies, adding to the beauty of the walk. The park is a paradise for bird lovers. Kibale hosts over 325 bird species, including several that are endemic to the Albertine Rift Valley. These include the Dusky Crimsonwing, Black-capped Apalis, Black-collared Apalis, Blue-headed Sunbird, Purple-breasted Sunbird, and Red-faced Woodland Warbler. Other notable species include the Great Blue Turaco, African Pitta, Black Bee-eater, Crowned Eagle, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Grey Parrot, and many more.
After the chimpanzee trek, you will return to the starting point and enjoy your packed picnic lunch. This is a good time to relax and reflect on the exciting morning in the forest.
In the afternoon, you will visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a successful community-run conservation project. This guided walk takes you through swampy habitats, forest edges, and grassland areas. Bigodi is often called a “bird paradise” and is one of the best birdwatching spots in Uganda. During the walk, you may spot special bird species such as the Great Blue Turaco, Papyrus Gonolek, Shining Blue Kingfisher, Red-headed Bluebill, Superb Sunbird, Black-crowned Waxbill, and Bocage’s Bushshrike. The area is also home to monkeys, butterflies, and many wetland plants. After this rewarding day, you will return to your lodge to freshen up and relax. In the evening, enjoy your farewell dinner, celebrating the end of an unforgettable journey through Rwanda and Uganda filled with primates, wildlife, and natural beauty.

This is the final day of your unforgettable safari. Wake up to the peaceful sounds of Kibale Forest and enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the lodge. After breakfast, you will begin your scenic drive to Entebbe, Uganda’s main gateway.
The journey covers about 350 kilometers and takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. Along the way, you will pass through changing landscapes that showcase the beauty of the country.
Dense rainforest slowly gives way to rolling hills, tea plantations, farmland, and lively towns. You may stop briefly along the route to stretch your legs, take photos, or buy local souvenirs. Your driver-guide will share stories about daily life in Uganda, making the journey both comfortable and interesting. Upon arrival in Entebbe, you will have some time to relax before your flight, depending on your departure schedule.
Your driver-guide will then transfer you to Entebbe International Airport and assist you with check-in procedures. This marks the end of your remarkable journey through Rwanda and Uganda. You depart with unforgettable memories of mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, wildlife, stunning landscapes, and warm African hospitality.
