Why Choose Uganda for a Honeymoon?

When you think of a honeymoon, you probably picture a pristine white beach. We don’t have that in Uganda. But in many ways, we offer something even more special, especially when you combine it with the unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking.

Instead of busy coastlines, you get space, privacy, and incredible natural beauty. The views are lush and green. The lodges are beautiful. You look out over the pristine nature where the wild animals roam. As far as we are concerned, it couldn’t be more romantic.

And speaking of romance, we can’t forget the sunset in Uganda, it’s priceless. And there is always something beautiful planned around it. A nice cold drink, a delicious dinner. Candles are always on the table. You are always surrounded by people who make the most of it, so it truly feels like your honeymoon.

Enjoy a close encounter with Mountain Gorillas

The true stars of a Uganda honeymoon adventure are the mountain gorillas. These gentle giants endangered. The only place in the world where you can still see them in the wild is here in Uganda and in our neighboring countries of Rwanda and Congo.

Nearly half of the world’s remaining population lives in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in southwest Uganda. This ancient rainforest is widely considered the best places on Earth to encounter mountain gorillas.

Bwindi protects around 500 strong yet gentle gorillas that move freely through the forest. They feed on roots, leaves, and fruits from the rich variety of trees and ferns that grow here. As you trek through the thick greenery, you are surrounded by birds, butterflies, and the deep sounds of the rainforest. Then comes the moment; when you quietly come face to face with a gorilla family.

At some point, your guide signal quietly. You are close. Your heart starts to race. You move forward slowly. Then suddenly, through the leaves, you see them. A gorilla family. Maybe a huge silverback sits calmly in the shade. Maybe young gorillas play in the branches. Mothers groom their babies.

The scene feels peaceful and completely natural. Visitors are guided to within about seven meters of the gorillas. Then the magical hour begins. Yes, you get one full hour with them. A wildlife adventure unlike any other.

You will both be captivated by the spectacular natural beauty of mountain slopes enveloped in lush vegetation inhabited by beautiful gorilla families. A wonderful experience to see these great primates undisturbed in their natural home.

The practical side of mountain gorilla trekking

You can visit gorillas in two national parks in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. You will need to purchase your gorilla permit well in advance. During peak season, permits often sell out up to six months ahead, while in the low season you may sometimes find last-minute availability.

Before the trek, it’s important to prepare properly. The gorillas do not follow fixed routes, so the difficult of the hike can be unpredictable, across hills and through dense vegetation. Sometimes you may find the gorillas after just 30 minutes of walking; other times it can take more than three hours.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete, though. A good pair of hiking shoes, long trousers to protect your legs, plenty of water, and a small snack are usually all you need.

Your gorilla trekking day typically begins early, around 6:00 am, when you transfer from your lodge to the park headquarters. After a short briefing, you meet your guides and trackers, who explain the rules and safety guidelines. Then the real adventure begins.

When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking?

Gorillas can be tracked all year round, but some months are easier than others.

The best trekking conditions are usually from June to September and December to February. During these dry months, trails are less muddy, hiking is easier, and visibility is often better. Because of this, gorilla permits sell out quickly, so it’s wise to book well in advance if you plan to travel during these times.

The rainy months can also be rewarding. The forest becomes lush and vibrant, and there are fewer visitors, making the experience more private. Permits may be easier to find, too. However, trails can be slippery, and you should be prepared for mud and occasional rain showers.

For adventurous couples who don’t mind a little extra challenge, the wet season can still offer an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.

Combine your honeymoon gorilla trek with other adventures

Gorilla trekking is the highlight of a Uganda honeymoon. But the country offers many other romantic experiences for couples. Here are a few perfect additions to make your trip even more memorable.

1. A sunset boat safari on the Nile

In the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set, you can take a private boat safari on the Nile River in Murchison Falls National Park. Drinks and snacks are provided on board, and you will float quietly along the river while watching elephants and other wildlife come to drink. The gentle movement of the boat, the golden light of the sunset, and the peaceful sounds of nature create a perfectly romantic and relaxing experience.

2. A scenic game drive

In the late afternoon, you can head into the Queen Elizabeth National Park for a scenic game drive. Spot elephants, buffalo, antelope, and other wildlife as you explore the beautiful landscape. Your guide will often find a quiet, picturesque spot where a small table can be set up, allowing you to enjoy a drink together surrounded by nature. After the drive, you return to your lodge for a delicious dinner, making for a perfectly romantic and memorable evening.

3. Tracking Chimpanzees in the Forest

If you loved the gorillas, chimpanzee tracking is another fantastic experience. Chimpanzees are lively and energetic. They move quickly through the forest canopy. Their calls echo through the trees. Spending time with them makes one thing very clear — they are our close relatives. This activity usually takes place in tropical forests such as Kibale National Park. The forest itself is beautiful. Even without chimps, the walk feels special. For wildlife-loving couples, this is a perfect addition to the honeymoon.
