Traveling through Uganda with children

Is Uganda a suitable country for traveling with children? We can confidently say yes. Many families with young children visit Uganda every year. It is a truly special experience. A family getaway in a completely new environment. It brings you closer together. It also opens young minds to the world. In this blog, we share the key things you should know before planning your Uganda family trip.

Travelling Through Uganda With Children

Uganda is child-friendly

We always say this with confidence. Uganda is a stable country. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. People are relaxed and friendly. Wherever you go, locals do their best to make children feel happy and comfortable.

On an adventure, but with comfort

A family trip to Uganda is, of course, an adventure. But it is also comfortable and relaxing. This balance is very important when traveling with children.

Comfort starts with the lodges we choose.

We work with properties that welcome families and understand children’s needs. They are safe, friendly, and well prepared. Most of them have swimming pools. This small detail makes a big difference after a long day of activities.

Transport is just as important. We use spacious Toyota Land Cruisers on all our family tours in Uganda. Each family member has their own seat and plenty of room. There is space to stretch, relax, and enjoy the journey. For younger children, the vehicle is perfect for a quiet nap between destinations.

For younger children, such a spacious car is a wonderful place to catch up on sleep.

Travel at a relaxed pace

If you are traveling with children in Uganda, we recommend traveling a little more slowly. It is all about the little things.

For instance, we do everything we can to make travel days a little more comfortable for children. Think of an extra lunch break, short activities along the way, or even replenishing the fruit basket.

Sometimes people consider adding extra stops and overnight stays to shorten their daily travel time. But we usually advise against this. The reason is simple: you will be moving around too often, which usually doesn’t make children happy.

Sometimes it is better to spend a few extra hours in the car, then stay in one place for three days. You can enjoy activities right from the lodge and finish the day with a relaxing swim in the pool.

It keeps travel fun, stress-free, and memorable for the whole family.

A tour guide who is good with children

The tour guide is key to a smooth family safari in Uganda.

If we organize your  Uganda tour, we will select a guide experienced with children. This makes the journey more fun for your kids and much easier for you as a parent.

Our guides understand children’s needs and moods. If your little ones want to run and play, we can stop at a nearby field, letting them kick a ball around with local children.

These small moments create joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories for the whole family.

If your children want to run around for a while, we simply stop at a field to kick a ball around with other children from the neighborhood.

In terms of food, there is something for everyone

We know children can be difficult eaters. The lodges and hotels we work with offer Western-style menus to make mealtimes easy. Special diets, allergies, and food preferences are always accommodated.

Your children won’t be limited to traditional Ugandan dishes. Menus usually include favorites like pizza, fish fingers with fries, or pasta – something familiar that makes them feel at home while still enjoying the adventure.

What activities do you do with children?

With children, you can do almost everything adults do.

The difference is how you organize it. We build in extra free time and space between activities to keep things fun and relaxed.

Game drives, for example, are often shorter for young children. A two-hour drive that includes sightings of giraffes, elephants, and zebras is usually enough to make them happy. You also have full flexibility. There’s no fixed start or end time.

If the children need more sleep in the morning, we simply start later. If they want a quick swim in the lodge pool during a game drive, we can turn around and return to the park afterward. This way, every day is balanced, fun, and stress-free for the whole family.

Generally, you do the same things with children as you would with adults. You just structure activities a little differently.

The gorilla and chimpanzee trekking have an age limit

Gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking have age limits. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15, while chimpanzee trekking is 12.

As a parent, you have options. You can do the trek yourself while your children enjoy a fun walk with the tour guide. At first, it may feel odd to leave them behind, but after traveling together for several days, your children and the guide will already be comfortable and familiar with each other.

Of course, you can also do all activities together as a family, but in that case, you may need to skip the gorilla or chimpanzee trekking. This ensures safety while still letting everyone enjoy the adventure.

Even with the more adventurous activities there are always family variants.

All other safari activities in Uganda are suitable for children. Even the more adventurous activities always have family options.

Take rafting: for grade 5 rafting, you must be 16 years old, but there’s also family rafting. It offers a similar experience, but adapted for children.
