Relaxed travel in Uganda? Here's how

Tours can sometimes feel intense. You are always on the move, seeing many sights and taking in a lot. Most travelers also need time to relax for a bit. We are sometimes asked if we can plan a few days at the beach at the end of the Uganda tour, in Tanzania or Kenya. While that is possible, we don’t always recommend it. We believe it is much better to plan your Uganda tour at a relaxed pace. Because that is perfectly possible: if you take your time, you can truly unwind between activities; you don’t need a beach for that.

Stay at least 2 or 3 nights in one place

The best way to relax is to spend a little longer in one location; at least two nights, in our opinion. Arriving in the afternoon, doing a quick activity, and leaving the next morning doesn’t give you time to really experience the area. Ideally, you arrive, settle in at your lodge, maybe take a dip in the pool, and do your activities the next day.

If you stay three nights, you can plan your days more freely. You’ll have time to explore in depth. Short stays only let you see the main highlights. Longer stays allow you to enjoy unique experiences beyond the highlights. These often include activities organized by local communities, giving you a more authentic taste of the area.

If you’re only somewhere for a short time, you won’t get beyond the highlights. If you stay a bit longer, you can also do more unique activities besides the highlights.

Travel slower and you'll enjoy your lodge much more

The lodges we book for our Uganda safaris are mid-range or luxurious. They all have fantastic views and often a swimming pool. Imagine watching the sunset while relaxing in the water, then enjoying a delicious dinner.

Your accommodation is one of the most expensive element of your trip. If you move too fast, you won’t get to enjoy it fully. By staying two or three nights, you don’t have to rush into the park early. You can rest, take your time, and enjoy the space. If you like, we can also book more exclusive lodges. Think of a pool carved from rock, offering a unique experience you won’t get at a beach.

By traveling slowly you contribute more

More and more travelers want to make a positive contribution to the places they visit – and that is a very good development.

The best way to support local communities is to travel more slowly. By staying longer in one place, you give the community a real opportunity to benefit from your stay. Local communities have developed all kinds of activities for visitors.  You can, for example, visit a coffee farm or take part in a workshop with skilled local craftspeople. They also organize hikes and nature walks, which are often far more beautiful and authentic than the standard tours that have been offered by tour operators for years.

By traveling at a slower pace and connecting with local communities, you get to experience much more of the real Uganda. You discover how people live, work, and thrive in their environment, and you create meaningful memories that go far beyond ordinary sightseeing.

How much time do you need to see Uganda?

The longer you stay in Uganda, the more you will experience. There is so much to see and do in Uganda. Of course, the length of your trip also depends on your budget and available time. Many travelers spend between 15 and 20 days exploring the country.

For the best experience, we recommend staying at least 10 to 16 days. This allows you to travel at a relaxed pace and enjoy all the highlights without rushing.

You will also have time for extra excursions and special activities organized by local communities. A shorter stay is still possible, but you will need to make choices and may miss some unique experiences.

For the most rewarding experience, we recommend coming to Uganda for at least 10 to 16 days.
