Paying in Uganda

We often asked: Can we pay things with card or do we need cash in Uganda? If we need cash, what currencies do we need?  Paying in Uganda is simple and easy. Cash is still widely used, especially when you are traveling around, so it’s a good idea to withdraw some Ugandan Shillings soon after you arrive. At lodges and larger hotels, you can usually pay by credit card without any problem. Having a mix of cash and card will make your Uganda safari trip smooth.

Credit card or cash?

Both are common in Uganda. For many locals, daily life still depends mostly on cash. However, in places you visit most often as a traveler, like lodges and hotels, it is very normal to pay with a credit card. Still, it is always wise to carry some Ugandan Shillings (the Ugandan Currency). You may need them for tips, small purchases, or when you are on the move. ATMs are becoming more common across the country, so withdrawing cash during your trip is usually easy. At most banks, you can withdraw up to 2,000,000 shillings (about 530 USD) per day. Transaction fees are generally low and often do not exceed around 10 USD, making it a convenient option for travelers.

We pay for your trip in advance

When we organize your safari in Uganda, most of your trip is paid for in advance. This includes your accommodations, meals, and planned activities. Your driver-guide also makes sure the car is always stocked with fresh fruit for the journey.

This means you don’t need to carry large amounts of cash while traveling. If you would like to buy something extra at your lodge (such as drinks or small extras) you can usually pay easily by credit card at most places.

You don’t need large stacks of cash during your tour through Uganda.

What is a Ugandan shilling worth?

To give you a clear idea, it’s easiest to compare the Ugandan shilling to the US dollar. As a rough guide, 1 US dollar equals a little over 3700 shillings. With about 3700 shillings, you can already enjoy something simple like two bottles of soda at a local shop. Prices for everyday items are generally affordable, which makes traveling in Uganda good value for money. Exchange rates can change, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest rate before or during your trip.

Should You Bring Cash From Home?

You don’t need to bring large amounts of cash from home when traveling to Uganda. It is usually easier and safer to withdraw money after you arrive. ATMs are widely available and generally reliable, and exchange offices are easy to find. Hotels and lodges can also assist if needed.

If you choose to bring foreign currency, US dollars are the best option. They are widely accepted and easy to exchange. Make sure your notes are clean and in good condition, as old or damaged bills are often refused. Euros and British pounds can also be exchanged, but US dollars remain the most commonly accepted currency.

Mobile Money in Uganda

Uganda is well known for mobile money. Many locals use their phones to pay for almost everything, from small purchases to daily services. The system is fast, simple, and widely trusted. As a visitor, you usually won’t need mobile money. Setting it up requires a local phone number and registration. For most travelers, cash and cards are more than enough. Still, it’s interesting to see how common mobile money is. It shows how modern, innovative, and practical everyday life in Uganda has become.

Safety Tips When Handling Money

Uganda is generally safe, but using basic common sense is always important. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash in one place. Use hotel safes whenever they are available, and keep some money stored separately as a backup. When using ATMs, choose machines located inside banks or shopping malls, as they are usually more secure. Try not to withdraw money late at night. These are simple habits, but they make a big difference. And in truth, they apply anywhere in the world

In summary: money is actually never an issue in Uganda. Want to know more? Feel free to ask your questions.
