Uganda has grown into one of the best luxury safari destinations in Africa, offering high-end lodges, excellent service, and polished operations. A Uganda luxury safari is highlighted by unforgettable mountain gorilla trekking, a rare and iconic wildlife experience available only in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
While gorillas remain the country’s signature attraction, Uganda offers much more: superb chimpanzee trekking, exceptional bird watching, and diverse primate encounters. Classic savannah safaris in parks like Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth provide opportunities to see the Big Five—lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. Combining exclusivity, rich wildlife, and dramatic landscapes, Uganda has firmly established itself as a top destination for a refined and adventurous African safari experience.
Uganda is an exciting and fast-growing destination with a lot to offer luxury travelers. High-end tourism is still developing, but the main parks and reserves now have several excellent lodges that provide comfort and top-level service. Scheduled flights connect the most popular areas, and affordable charter flights make it easy to explore the country in style. Gorilla trekking has long been included as an add-on to safaris in Kenya or Tanzania. But as Uganda becomes better set up for luxury travel, visitors can now enjoy a full Uganda luxury safari without needing to combine it with other countries.
Our luxury Uganda Safari packages are all-inclusive, and many top lodges we use include all meals, drinks, activities, and laundry in their rates. Some even offer a complimentary massage to help you relax after a day in the forest or on rough park roads. It’s important to check in advance what each lodge includes so you don’t face any surprises during your trip. Tips are never part of the package, and they can add up. Many people help make your Uganda luxury safari special—lodge staff (often including a private butler and housekeeper), your driver-guide, porters, park guides, and trackers.
For most visitors, gorilla trekking is the biggest highlight of a Uganda luxury safari. It’s the main reason many travelers come to Uganda and is often described as one of Africa’s top wildlife experiences. Even budget travelers are willing to pay the higher permit cost because seeing mountain gorillas up close is truly once-in-a-lifetime.
You may even want to do two treks, as Uganda has many different gorilla families and each visit feels unique. Some groups have several silverbacks, while others have many young gorillas. The two parks that offer trekking also feel very different. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a dense rainforest with thick vegetation, while Mgahinga Gorilla National Park usually offers sightings in the bamboo zone on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes.
A Uganda luxury safari has many different habitats, so each day can vary with game drives, boat trips, and forest walks. In the savannah, your day often begins with a wake-up call before sunrise. After a hot drink, you head out to look for big cats and other predators. By mid-morning, you return to the lodge for brunch, then rest during the heat of the day and enjoy the comfort around you. Later, you go out again for an afternoon game drive or a relaxing boat trip.
Some days you may take a longer trip into the park to explore areas farther from your lodge. Days in the forest are different, with gorilla or chimp trekking as the main focus. You usually leave after breakfast and return for a late lunch. After a morning on steep, slippery forest paths, the afternoon is for rest and relaxation.
There are many types of luxury accommodations in Uganda. Some older lodges are large hotels with modern comforts like 24-hour electricity, Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and hair dryers in the rooms. The trend now is for smaller, exclusive lodges with 8 to 10 beautifully designed units. Many use canvas and thatch, either as traditional safari tents under a thatched roof or canvas on wooden frames—something between a tent and a room.
The focus is on privacy and excellent service. You might have a private butler and housekeeper to take care of your needs, from bringing morning coffee to cleaning your shoes after gorilla trekking. Many lodges use solar power and have electricity only at certain times, WIFI may be in the lounge only, and hot ‘bush showers’ may be available on request. The design usually blends with the surrounding environment.
A luxury safari in Uganda typically costs between US$600 and US$1,000 per person per day. This is only an estimate, as most of our Uganda tours are tailor-made and many factors affect the final price. Some parks and lodges are very remote, so your safari may include a mix of driving and fly-in transfers. These remote locations make mass tourism difficult, which adds to the cost—but also to the appeal. There can be extra costs, such as tips for guides and rangers or fees for optional activities. Most packages include accommodations, park fees, transport, a tour guide, and three meals a day. Drinks may also be included, depending on your package. Tips for guides usually range from US$10 to US$15 per person per day, though on a luxury safari some guests give more.
