Are you keen on exploring Tanzania? Keep these tips in mind when planning your safari in Tanzania:
From stealing magic moments with mountain gorillas to heart-warming cultural encounters with villagers, Rwanda will offers experiences unlike any other. Volcanic mountains, dense rainforests, tranquil freshwater lakes and lively towns add a stunning backdrop to Rwanda’s real gems – the sincere, proud people and majestic, mysterious wildlife.
There is no better place on the planet to watch huge herds of elephants than in Amboseli National Park. And did you know that Maasai Mara National Reserve contains one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on Earth? While on your safari in Kenya, ensure you don’t skip the beautiful coastline, a stunning blend of African, Indian and Arabic culture…
Uganda is emerging as an up-and-coming travel destination. It’s a wonderful country for primate lovers, and a great place to experience an African safari for a considerably lower price than in one of the nearby countries. The warm hospitality of the locals, well-maintained roads, and its relatively compact size make Uganda an ideal choice for a safari adventure.
The best time to visit Tanzania is during the Dry season, which runs from June to October. This period is optimal for wildlife viewing and for witnessing the wildebeest migration in Serengeti National Park. If you want to see the wildebeest calving, January to February is the most reliable time. While the Southern and Western circuit parks are best explored during the Dry season, the Northern circuit parks can be visited throughout the year.
A 3-4 day safari offers a great introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife and scenery, typically covering the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. A 5-10 day safari, on the other hand, provides a more thorough exploration, including other parks such as Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
On average, a budget safari Tanzania costs around $250 (USD) per person per day, a mid-range Tanzania safari costs $375 per person per day, and a luxury safari in Tanzania costs $600 per person per day. We won’t beat around the acacia bush, Tanzania is one of the more expensive safari destinations in Africa.
While both countries offer great off-season deals, safaris in Kenya tend to be slightly less expensive than those in Tanzania. This is partly because Kenya has invested heavily in promoting itself internationally, resulting in more flight options, a wider range of accommodations, and more safari lovers (don’t think this means crowded though. Africa is not a place of huge hotels with thousands of rooms – a 40-room lodge in Kenya is considered unusual and gigantic! On the other hand, a safari in Tanzania often costs more, particularly if you want to visit exclusive reserves such as Nyerere, Ruaha, and Mahale. Tanzania is a far bigger country, which means nearly all travel outside the Northern Circuit involves transfers by light aircraft.
A safari in the Masai Mara is generally more affordable than one in the Serengeti. This is partly because the Masai Mara offers a wider range of budget-friendly accommodations, many of which are located outside the reserve. In contrast, the Serengeti’s vast size and its primary entry point through the Ngorongoro make staying outside the park and entering for day visits impractical. In the Masai Mara, well-priced lodgings are mostly concentrated in the eastern part of the reserve, which can lead to crowds, especially during peak season. Accommodations on the quieter western side or the central plains of the Mara tend to be more expensive. For a more secluded experience, consider staying in one of the private conservancies to the north of the national reserve. When comparing these options, the cost of a safari in the Mara and the Serengeti can be similar.
The most cost-effective way to enjoy a safari in Tanzania is to travel in a group, which allow you to share expenses for accommodations and game drives. Opting for midrange safari packages from local operators can also help lower costs, as these often include basic lodgings and shared activities. Traveling during the low season further reduces prices for both park fees and accommodations. Staying in midrange lodges instead of luxury lodges adds to the savings. Additionally, focusing on fewer parks can make the safari more affordable.
Choosing between the Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve depends on your interests. The Serengeti offers vast landscapes and a chance to see the Great Migration in a more expansive setting, while the Masai Mara provides easier access to the migration and high-density predator sightings in a more compact area. Consider your preferred experience and travel timing to make the best choice.
