Under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, the country has attracted leading tourism operators, resulting in luxury accommodation near Volcanoes National Park, where you can encounter mountain gorillas. Additionally, the rewilding of Akagera Park by the non-profit African Parks has introduced Big 5 safaris to the region. Rwanda is also known for its cleanliness, largely due to its monthly community clean-up initiatives and a ban on plastic bags.
While many visitors come primarily for the gorilla trekking, Rwanda also offers diverse wildlife experiences, excellent bird watching opportunities, and a vibrant, artsy capital, Kigali. Uganda is emerging as an up-and-coming travel destination. It’s a wonderful country for primate lovers, and a great place to experience an African safari for a considerably lower price than in one of the nearby countries. The warm hospitality of the locals, well-maintained roads, and its relatively compact size make Uganda an ideal choice for a safari adventure.
The cost of a safari in Rwanda can vary widely depending on several factors such as the type of safari, the length of the trip, the level of accommodation, the time of year and the activities you choose to do. On average, a mid-range safari can cost between $300 to $600 per person per day. Luxury safaris can range from $600 to $1,200 or more per person per day.
Gorilla trekking is the main Rwanda safari activity. You need a gorilla permit from Rwanda Developments Board to confirm a Rwanda gorilla permit. The cost of Rwanda gorilla trekking permits is $1500 for foreign nonresidents, $500 for foreign residents, and $250 for East Africans.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, and there is no upper age limit. The difficulty of gorilla trekking can vary based on factors like the specific location, the gorilla family being visited, the weather on the day of the trek, and your own physical fitness. Overall, gorilla trekking is considered moderately to highly physically demanding. However, with appropriate trekking gear and support from an experienced team, most people can complete the gorilla trekking adventure.
Both Rwanda and Uganda offer remarkable gorilla trekking experiences, each with its own advantages. Rwanda, with its Volcanoes National Park, provides a more accessible trek from Kigali and often involves shorter hikes to find the gorillas, although permits are more expensive at around $1,500. In contrast, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks offer diverse trekking experiences and generally lower permit cost of $800, but may require longer travel times. Rwanda’s infrastructure makes for a more streamlined visit, while Uganda’s remote locations can offer a more rugged, intimate adventure.
Rwanda safari trips are offered year-round, with the best time to visit depending on your weather preferences and tolerance for rain. Mountain gorilla trekking, the main draw, is possible throughout the year, though trekking can be challenging during the Wet season (March, April, October, and November) due to the heavy rainfall in the forested Virunga Mountains. The driest months, from June to August, are ideal for gorilla trekking and also for hiking in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
While primate sightings in Nyungwe are possible year-round, chimpanzees are easier to find during the Wet season as they venture deeper into the forest in search of food. Despite the rain, the Wet season offers benefits such as fewer crowds, lower lodge rates, and more availability for gorilla permits, especially if you have good weatherproof gear and don’t mind occasional showers.
