Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Transfer back to Kigali
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be greeted by our company representatives. It is essential that you arrive in Kigali before 1pm. If your flight is scheduled to arrive after 1pm, you will need to arrive a day earlier and arrange for one night’s pre-tour accommodation. Please ensure that you have reviewed the visa requirements for Rwanda, as you must apply for your visa prior to your arrival.
On arrival, you will visit the Genocide Museum, which opened in 2004 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. While the genocide resulted from a complex range of factors, it stands as an undeniable tragedy for Rwanda and its people. A visit to the museum will undoubtedly be a deeply emotional experience, but it provides an essential opportunity to grasp the immense courage and resilience of the people of this remarkable, small nation.
Next, you will drive through Rwanda’s lush, rolling hills on your way to see the gorillas. Your accommodation is situated in Musanze Town (formerly known as Ruhengeri). This quaint town serves as the entrance to Volcanoes National Park, one of the few remaining sanctuaries for the endangered mountain gorillas.

We begin the day early, heading to the park headquarters for a briefing by the guides of Volcanoes National Park before embarking on our gorilla trek. Spanning 13,000 hectares, this national park safeguards the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Mountains, which feature six extinct volcanoes and two active ones along the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park’s diverse landscape includes bamboo forests, alpine moorland, grasslands, and marshes. Within the park, there are 12 distinct gorilla families.
This area is one of the last refuges for the mountain gorillas. To protect the gorillas, only eight visitors are allowed per day to visit each habituated family, and visits are carefully regulated to reduce the risk of disturbance or disease transmission to the gorillas.
Gorilla trekking through the dense forest can be relative challenging, often wet, muddy, and uncomfortable. The terrain is tough, with steep hills and humid conditions, making it physically demanding. However, the excitement of encountering a habituated gorilla family, led by a powerful silverback male, far outweighs the difficulties. You should be prepared and in good physical condition, as the trek can last up to four hours, including uphill and downhill sections. It may take anywhere from 40 minutes to four hours to reach the designated gorilla family. The trackers will have already located the family by the time we begin, so the walking time is usually predictable. We will get very close to the calm and gentle gorillas, and observing their behavior is like seeing a mirror image of yourself. Your visit with the gorillas will last one unforgettable hour.
As lunch can be taken upon return to the hotel, it is advised that you bring a few snacks to keep you going throughout the morning. At the end of the day the comforts of the lodge beckon, along with a chance to reflect on what is sure to be a truly memorable day.

After an early breakfast, enjoy a more relaxed but equally remarkable adventure as you trek in search of golden monkeys. In June 2003, the national parks department began offering permits for visitors to explore trails in pursuit of these rare and captivating primates. The walk takes you to the forest’s edge, where observing the playful and social behavior of the golden monkeys is truly enchanting. Following this experience, your driver-guide will take you back to Kigali, with a stop at one of the top local restaurants for lunch. From there, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel, residence, or the airport for your departure.
