Tour Summary
Day 1: Transfer to Musanze/Volcanoes National Park
Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park and transfer back to Kigali
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, our Greenway Nature Tours representative will welcome you. Please note that it is important to arrive in Kigali before 1 pm. If your flight lands after 1 pm, you will need to arrive a day earlier and book accommodation for the night before the tour. Make sure you have reviewed Rwanda’s visa requirements, as you must obtain your visa before arriving.
On arrival, you will visit the Kigali Genocide Museum, which opened in 2004 to mark the 10th anniversary of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. While the genocide was the result of a complex set of factors, it remains an undeniable tragedy for Rwanda and its people. A visit to the museum will be an emotionally moving experience, offering an important opportunity to understand the immense courage and resilience of the people of this remarkable, tiny nation.
Next, you will journey through Rwanda’s scenic, rolling hills on your way to encounter the gorillas. Your accommodation will be in Musanze Town (formerly known as Ruhengeri), a charming town that serves as the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, one of the last remaining havens for the endangered mountain gorillas.

Optional Activity
Start your day early with a briefing by the guides at the Volcanoes National Park offices before setting out on your mountain gorilla trekking adventure. Covering 13,000 hectares, the park protects the Rwandan part of the Virunga Mountains, which includes six extinct volcanoes and two active ones along the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park’s varied terrain features bamboo forests, alpine moorlands, grasslands, and marshes. It is home to 12 different gorilla families.
This park is one of the last sanctuaries for mountain gorillas. To ensure their protection, only eight visitors are permitted each day to visit each habituated family, and these visits are carefully managed to minimize the risk of disturbance or disease transmission to the gorillas.
Gorilla trekking through the dense forest can be quite challenging, often wet, muddy, and uncomfortable. The terrain is rugged, with steep hills and humid conditions, making it physically demanding. However, the thrill of encountering a habituated gorilla family, led by a powerful silverback, makes the effort worthwhile.
You should be prepared and in good physical condition, as the trek can last up to four hours, including both uphill and downhill sections. Reaching the gorilla family can take anywhere from 40 minutes to four hours, but the trackers will have already located the family, so the walking time is usually predictable. You’ll get very close to the calm and gentle gorillas, and observing their behavior will feel like looking into a mirror. Your time with the gorillas will be an unforgettable hour. Afterward, you’ll hike back to meet your driver and transfer to the lodge for lunch and refreshment, check out, and return to Kigali.
