Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire: Approx. 2 ½ Hour Drive

Your safari adventure begins at 7:30 am when your Greenway Nature Tours driver/guide arrives at your hotel, residence, or designated pick-up point. Settle in a 4×4 safari vehicle and enjoy a scenic drive of approximately two and a half hours in a southwesterly direction.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to some beautiful views. Upon arrival at your lodge or camp, you’ll have time to enjoy a delicious lunch. Afterward, take a moment to relax before heading out for your first game drive. As you explore the park, you’ll start building your list of wildlife sightings, including mammals, birds, and more, while learning about the park’s incredible ecosystem.

Tarangire is a lovely quiet park, off the beaten safari track, renowned for its impressive elephant migrations. The park named after the Tarangire River that runs through it. Its landscape is mainly open savanna, dotted with Acacia woodlands and iconic Baobab trees. Along the river, you’ll find denser riparian woodlands and even clusters of palm trees.

Covering an area of 2,850 km², Tarangire serves as a crucial refuge during the dry season, attracting large numbers of migratory animals, including African elephants, plains zebras, common wildebeest, common eland, African buffalo, and various antelope, all drawn to the park’s permanent water sources. Herds of elephants, sometimes up to 600 strong, roam the park, while the abundance of prey draws numerous predators, particularly lions. In fact, after Serengeti, Tarangire boasts the highest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania!

On a morning safari, look out for cackling jackals, brave honey badgers or long-necked ostriches strutting through the grass. Enjoy a peaceful picnic breakfast in the heart of the vast Serengeti before we begin our journey to the Ngorongoro Crater.

As we arrive at the rim of Ngorongoro, one of Africa’s most stunning natural wonders and the world’s largest intact caldera, you’ll be in awe of the breathtaking views. We’ll descend nearly 600 meters to the crater floor, entering a self-contained world of riverine forests, open plains, freshwater and alkaline lakes. The landscape is nothing short of spectacular, and within the 300 square kilometers of the crater lies a remarkable array of wildlife.

Keep your eyes open for the rare and endangered black rhinoceros, which roams these lands. On the crater floor, the grasslands gradually merge into swamps, lakes, rivers, woodlands, and hills. The Maasai people, with their cattle, are often seen leading their herds to drink from the permanent lake, adding a cultural touch to this extraordinary wildlife haven.

Enjoy a bush picnic lunch on the crater floor before continuing with your game drive. As evening falls, we’ll climb back up the volcanic rim and marvel at a stunning sunset lighting up the crater’s rim.
