Is Uganda safe for tourists?
Embassy reports on travel in developing countries often tend to be overly cautious. In the case of Uganda, it’s disappointing to see specific incidents highlighted without adequate consideration of the local context, which can distort the perception of safety. Our experiences in Uganda have consistently shown it to be a safe destination, filled with friendly locals and a welcoming atmosphere.
While it’s true that Uganda has faced a few terrorist attacks in the west, carried out by the ADF, a rebel group based in Eastern DRC, it’s important to keep these events in perspective. Many countries, including those in Europe, have experienced terrorist incidents. Does that mean we should avoid visiting cities like Paris, Brussels, or Prague? Similarly, if we compare safety in Uganda to the United States, we see that many American cities struggle with gang violence, an issue that is virtually non-existent in Uganda. Yet, people generally don’t label the U.S. as unsafe for travel, nor do embassies issue travel warnings against visiting there. In contrast, after an attack near the DRC border, embassies recommend against all non-essential travel to Uganda.
What type of accommodations can I expect on a Uganda safari?
Uganda’s tourism sector has developed more recently than some of the established safari destinations like Kenya and Tanzania. Today, most Uganda safaris parks and reserves offer a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly to luxury.
The gorilla trekking forest of Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks are situated at high altitudes, resulting in a cold and often wet climate. As a result, accommodations in this region typically feature cozy cottages with log fires to keep guests warm.
In the savannah reserves, luxury tented camps are a popular choice, and camping is also available. This budget-friendly option can be especially rewarding for adventurous travelers.
What does gorilla trekking in Uganda cost?
The current permit fee for gorilla trekking in Uganda is US$800 for visitors from outside Africa. While this may seem expensive, it’s a great deal compared to the US$1,500 fee in Rwanda, the only other country where these gentle giants can be tracked. It’s worth noting that permits for Ugandan residents and citizens of other African nations are significantly cheaper.
Uganda gorilla safaris take place in two locations: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. Both parks provide a similar experience, allowing visitors to spend one hour with a gorilla family after reaching their location, with a limit of 8 people per group.
An exclusive activity offered only in Bwindi is the gorilla habituation experience. This involves visiting a group of gorillas that are still adapting to human interaction. The experience is limited to four tourists per group, allowing for a stay of up to four hours with the gorillas, compared to the usual one hour. However, because these gorillas are not fully habituated, viewing them may be more challenging as they tend to keep their distance. The fee for this unique experience is US$1,500.
