Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Lake Naivasha (100kms – Approx 2hrs)

Around 7 am, we will pick you up from your hotel, residence, or Nairobi airport and begin our safari journey through the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

We’ll make stops along the way to admire the dramatic rises and drops of this marvelous landscape. After a relatively short drive, we’ll reach Lake Naivasha, a large freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, where we will transition from jeep to boat for a safari across the lake.

On the water, watch hippos and peer through your binoculars to spot lovebirds, ibis, pelicans, cormorants, and the African fish eagle. Then step ashore at Crescent Island – a peaceful wildlife sanctuary located in the middle of the lake.

Enjoy a guided stroll in search of wildebeest, waterbucks, zebras, giraffes and gazelle.  You might also spot giraffes, buffalo, and even some hippos. It’s a wonderful way to wrap up the day.

Day 2: Naivasha – Hell’s Gate – Lake Nakuru (70km – approx. 2 hrs)

(If you’d prefer, you can visit Lake Bogoria instead of Lake Nakuru to see larger flocks of flamingos.)

Have you ever visited a park called Hell’s Gate? Or gone on a safari by bicycle? Today, we’ll do both as we enjoy a leisurely bike ride to the nearby national park. The park is known for its geothermal features, including geysers and hot springs, which is how it got its intriguing name. We’ll embark on a hike through the canyons, searching for peacefully grazing animals like impalas and antelopes.

Afterward, a quick one-hour drive will take us to Lake Nakuru National Park to view waterfalls, acacia and euphorbia trees accenting the park.

This beautiful place is home to a mind-boggling variety of birds, and we’ll be on the lookout for ostriches, cormorants, pelicans, and pink flamingos. The park’s wildlife is equally remarkable, featuring the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, tree-climbing lions and a significant population of endangered rhinos. Be on the lookout for leopards, as they have also been spotted here.

But now, it’s time to buckle up and make our way to the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve. The Masai Mara boasts a rich abundance of animals across its rolling hills and vast savannahs, particularly lions and other big cats.

We’ll arrive in time for an afternoon game drive to explore the park’s stunning landscape, featuring Africa’s iconic acacia trees. And don’t miss the breathtaking sunsets that the Mara is famous for.

Day 4: Full day safari in Masai Mara Game Reserve

The Masai Mara boasts the highest concentration of wildlife of any park in Africa. We’ll begin early to take advantage of this natural abundance on the first of unlimited game drives throughout the day. Feel free to discuss with your driver/guide how you’d like to structure your time in the park.

One of the park’s standout features is the Great Migration, which occurs between July and October. This is the most incredible wildlife migration on the planet, with vast numbers of gazelles, wildebeests, and zebras crossing the Mara River in a timeless journey in search of fresh grazing grounds. We’ll enjoy our lunch by the Mara River, where we might catch a glimpse of the migration, while also keeping an eye out for hippos and monstrous Nile crocodiles that call the river home.

Meanwhile, in the hills and across the plains, other predators lie in wait, following the natural rhythms of the wild as they stalk the grazing animals.

You might also want to set aside time for an optional cultural experience with the local tribes. Ask your driver/guide to organize a visit to the nearby Maasai village, where you can observe and learn about their way of life and traditions.

To cap off your 5-day adventure, we offer an optional pre-dawn hot air balloon safari over the park. There’s nothing quite like watching the park come to life at sunrise from above. You’ll be talking about it for years. Your guide will be happy to make the arrangements.

Day 5: Masai Mara – Nairobi (265km – Approx. 5 hrs)

After a leisurely breakfast at your lodge/camp, your dedicated driver guide will assist you with the checkout process and proceed to Nairobi – Kenya’s colorful capital city.

On the way, your guide will point out the Longonot, an extinct strato volcano located southeast of Lake Naivasha in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. It is believed to have last erupted in the 1860s, and its name comes from the Maasai word “Oloonong’ot,” meaning “mountains of many spurs” or “steep ridges.” You can choose to stop by Kiambethu Farm for a tea farm tour, which includes a three-course buffet lunch (at an additional cost), or head directly back to the capital for a transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home.
